Ok, ok, so the last five chapters (which I just caught up on all at once) have been kind of cool and have made me want to know what happens next. But my overall reaction remains "Are we STILL in this damned freaking never-ending Magical World arc?!" I've grown tired of it. The epic is awesome, but this is just dragging ON.

...And hurry up and bring Emily back to life already! *sobs*

I think its just how long we have to wait for chapters and etc that your feeling that way lol. If they came out quick it'd probably be more enjoyable x.x

Maybe. The fact that I've been reading the manga for something like two years (I don't have exact dates, but chapter 221 was current when I started) and we've been in the magical world that whole time may have something to do with it.

It also doesn't help that I happened to like the feel of the chapters where folks were just around school, with no heavy plot going on. All the stuff we've learned on this trip has been great (there aren't going to be any unresolved plot threads LEFT when this arc finishes, it seems), but I kind of enjoyed the chapters before everyone got tangled back up in the plot. The summer vacation stuff from before they went off to Wales was perhaps my favorite part of the series. I want to be able to go back to that, with Collette and Bea and Emily included as part of the group.

Amen to that too. Hopefully Yue and Makie's recent talk was foreshadowing on it happening.

I miss everyone who was left back at Mahora, and truly hope they can catch up to Ala Alba's character and power development to some degree eventually.

That's the biggest disadvantage of a multi-genre series, really. Some of us were drawn by the fluffy school moments, some for the harem shenanigans, and some for stuff blowing up, and Akamatsu must juggle between them all. And that's not our fault; the series did promise them all.

Take the latest arc for example. Many wished for it to end quickly and they have the right for it, since there's been less on the factor that drawn them to Negima. Me? I think it's the moment that the series started to actually move from great to awesome, since it's the action that appealed to me most. In fact, I almost gave up this series back during the Kyoto arc only to return when my favorite lil' vampire iced a big damn demon god...

When the arc is finally over and the obligatory breather volume followed, I'm pretty sure I'll be the one wishing for that to end...

Frankly, it's the publishers fault for not letting him do what he want from the first place. Genre shifts are very risky

Well, if Akamatsu doesn't introduce any more crazy twists, this arc should be over soon and we'll get a comic relief breather after wards.

I personally enjoyed the series from the very beginning and I have never found it dull. However, I definitely got more interested once the series became more action oriented and plot driven. For me, the series moved from very good to something special after the poignant resolution of the Mahora tournament (the brief father-son reunion)

I don't object to the action as a whole. I loved seeing Eva freeze and shatter the demon-god and take down Fate. But let's face it: all the magic she or ANYONE did in the Kyoto arc wouldn't even get anyone through the first ten seconds of a fight nowadays. My objection to the action at present is that they've raised the bar so ludicrously high. Even just at the strength he was at when he entered the Magical World, Negi was a GOD compared to the pathetic little mites that were ordinary mages. The difference in power between a regular mage and the protagonist/antagonist is too extreme. It bugs me.

But no, that's not actually my real problem with the Magical World arc. It's just TOO LONG. The tension of them being trapped in the magical world and all the (many many many) related stresses have stretched out over 130 chapters to the point that I am simply sick of them. Even the lighter chapters they had during this arc have not been as good as if they were back home because they AREN'T home. That sort of tension can only be maintained for so long before it switches to annoyance about how long it's taking for the author to resolve it, and for me that point was about... Oh... sixty chapters ago, give or take.

The Namek thing is infamous because of the anime; the "five minutes" it took for it to blow up were spread over multiple episodes, if I recall correctly.

At least here, the reason it's taking so long is because new stuff keeps happening, rather than just dragging out one event. I agree that it's dragging now, and Akamatsu should move on, but at least there's been a steady stream of new developments.

Those spoiler tags have those titles for a reason. Spoiler for 315 Leads to Madness: Yay, it's out. Figures we come back from break and I get a reason to completely lose my head. Apologies in advance. You know, it’s weird, but I didn’t mind the multiple Fates too much until the last two chapters. With them spreading so much chaos into the mix, they really stirred things up. They made things desperate in a way I think a lot of people wanted the Fatettes to manage. Suddenly, the Ala Alba wasn’t on the winning side. Things got a lot more balanced. And angsty, which is always fun. But with Negi taking on Quartum, I kind of have to resent the addition of the extra Fates simply because I can’t really see the point of the fight. I don’t think the introduction of the other Fates could have been done nearly as effectively if one of the groups was left alone. As far as drama goes, their intro is one of my favorite parts of this entire arc. So for that reason, it was nice that Quartum existed. He came, he caused serious damage; fantastic. However, with him fighting (and losing) against Negi, any fondness I had for him as a plot device pretty much vanished. Instead of a valid concern for the people at the ships (which he was) he has now been downgraded to Detour For Negi. I haven’t felt a lot of Arc Fatigue for the most part, since rushing what could be the end of a world isn’t a good idea and it’ll feel much faster when read in volume format, but I am certainly of the opinion that Negi was not in need any more detours. With Poyo, there was at least the bonus of seeing what Cosmo Entelecheia is like. And it’s hard to hate seeing Negi with his parents or being back at Mahora. Seeing everyone’s fantasy was fun too. That didn’t change that it brought the awesome momentum being built up to a screeching halt, but it had enough positives as a sidetrack that it was enjoyable. Then Negi loses control of Magia Erebea. Again. After specifically going through training to avoid this. The handling of it isn’t really poorly done, and it’s great that other members of the Ala Alba got to shine, but it’s hard to appreciate that when there’s so little point to it. He has a conversation in his head with all the people who inspired him along his path and decides to continue onward even though it’ll be hard. The only thing of possible value in that whole thing was his father saying that he’d be waiting up ahead, and that wasn’t really necessary information. …Another annoyance stemming from that detour is that now, if he loses control again, it’ll be even more frustrating. And honestly, seeing him collapse at the end of his fight with Tertium, only to be consumed by Magia Erebea, would be sort of awesome. Of course, close to immediately following that, Asuna would bash him with her sword to cancel the effects. That would be kind of awesome. It could still happen, but after seeing Negi fall back into the darkness so many times, it wouldn’t have the same punch. Anyway. He’s finally awake. Raring to go and stripping girls as part of his morning routine. And… he goes off to fight with a guy who hadn’t even appeared before his stint of unconsciousness. Didn’t we already get proof of Negi being awesome after conquering Magia Erebea? He defended his friends from Tsukuyomi and then went to work destroying the hordes of demons she summoned, getting a sweet Back To Back Badasses moment with Setsuna to boot. It was pretty epic. Immediately followed by the aforementioned screeching halt, but it still rocked. And… okay, he does an awesome job of beating up Quartum… but so what? We’ve seen him be badass. At this point, it’s almost as natural to him as stripping girls—which he does in his sleep. His fight with Quartum adds nothing except Quartum’s defeat, and it’s really hard to feel enthusiastic about that. Quartum doesn’t seem to have much going for him besides being a crazy sadist—admittedly, some variation of that is true for all the new Fates, but the lack of depth to the other two isn’t really an issue at the moment. In Sextum’s case, the Gravekeeper is keeping an eye on her, and Quintum… Okay, I was about to say he still has a purpose in creating tension because of Natsumi’s presence (along with certain unconscious people’s) near the battleground, but if the next chapter is nothing but him and Tertium fighting with Negi showing up to join in on the last page it won’t matter how well-drawn the fight is; it will be boring. I like flashing lights and explosions and battles in general just fine, but it’s always been my thought that you have to make something pretty damn epic if you’re going to keep the conflict solely physical. Duels without emotional conflict fall flat for me, and none of the new Fates have had enough emotional depth shown to have any conflict of that sort. Of course, that’s just my personal opinion like all of this, so its validity is questionable at best. Switching fights now. Yes, Quartum caused quite a bit of damage to Negi’s companions, which is a really good reason to be pissed off, but Negi finds that out the same chapter he defeats Quartum. That on its own isn’t exactly bad, but you could have him fight Quintum (alongside Tertium while you’re at it) and keep him closer to the path leading to his duel with Tertium. After all, Quintum’s caused a lot of damage too. He hasn’t been as sadistic about it as Quartum, but I’m pretty sure his body count is higher. Oh yeah, and as a side note, Sextum’s purpose beyond being female is that her presence brought the Gravekeeper person out to play. So going on that, I suppose maybe only Sextum has a purpose beyond creating tension. And as far as creating tension goes, personally, I found Quintum’s attack much more effective than Quartum’s cruelty, making Quartum the weakest link of the three. …And he’s the one that Negi goes off to fight first after stripping Sextum. I really don’t remember my original point, but considering everything, his fight with Quartum really does seem pointless. Granted, who knows what the translation will reveal, but I’m not sure what could make it worthwhile. The added stress that came with the Fates was good with Ala Alba dominating the field, but now that Negi’s around again… I really think that the extra Fates muddied the waters more than they moved the plot along. For the most part. Quintum did get the Key back, and again, Sextum did bring out the Gravekeeper. It was just Quartum who didn’t do much of anything besides having antagonist melded to his forehead. …Good grief. I dislike a crazy character’s involvement in a story. How did that happen? And just like that I’m finding myself on the side of the people who thought the Fatettes should be a more credible threat just because it would’ve been nice to have a credible threat to the members of the party not caught up in personal skirmishes. Yikes. That’s a little surprising. I think I’ve found, lost, and repeated my point at least a dozen times. That seems like a good time to end this. …Hey, is anyone even going to read this? Sorry. It got a little long and it’s probably pretty pointless most of the time. Spoiler for TL;DR: Fights should be satisfying for reasons beyond the losing party torturing catgirl robots.
