Unfortunately, Japan's infamous taboo against psychological intervention is working against her.

At the very least, Hachiman, Keima and Kodaka or even Kotoura does not suffer from that crippling shyness, and phobia of speaking to others. Given the tone of this story- at this rate, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends with Tomoko committing suicide, or some other kind of horrific bad end.
Yeah so far it's like a tragic dark humored story.
Her fear of people stems from her lack of self acceptance (she obviously hates herself)
I feel that her inability to communicate with others is because she feels like shes not worth it.
Hm I don't know if this is just a "just lay back and enjoy" cringy comedy since I haven't read the manga, but it would be so sick if they ended it on a tragic ending. That would certainly be unexpected, well for me at least.

I could see nova's suggestion of the manga ending with Tomoko committing suicide coming to pass. The fact that she threatened killing herself to her brother in this first episode would make Tomoko going through with the act towards the very end of the story a dark variation of the 'Things coming full circle' style of ending.

She most likely has Social Anxiety Disorder:

Quote:
The diagnosis of social anxiety disorder can be of a specific disorder (when only specific social situations are feared) or a generalized disorder. Generalized social anxiety disorder typically involves a persistent, intense, chronic fear of being judged by others and of being embarrassed or humiliated by one's own actions. These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from others. While the fear of social interaction may be recognized by the person as excessive or unreasonable, overcoming it can be quite difficult. Social anxiety disorder is known to appear at an early age in most cases. 50% of those who develop this disorder have developed it by the age of 11 and 80% have developed it by age 20. This early age of onset may lead to people with social anxiety disorder being particularly vulnerable to depressive illnesses, drug abuse and other psychological conflicts.[3] Physical symptoms often accompanying social anxiety disorder include excessive blushing, sweating (hyperhidrosis), trembling, palpitations and nausea. Stammering may be present, along with rapid speech. Panic attacks can also occur under intense fear and discomfort. An early diagnosis may help minimize the symptoms and the development of additional problems, such as depression. Some sufferers may use alcohol or other drugs to reduce fears and inhibitions at social events. It is common for sufferers of social phobia to self-medicate in this fashion, especially if they are undiagnosed, untreated, or both; this can lead to alcoholism, eating disorders or other kinds of substance abuse.

That's how the original scanlator translated the title. It's not entirely accurate (it's literally, "However You Think About It, My Unpopularity Is Your Fault") but it's what most manga fans call it.

Oy, that would be terrible!

I took her suicide threat as comical...just from how the scene was treated...

Holy shit this series is depressing. I mean series like Boku wa Tomodachi and Yahari deal with "loner" issues but at least that had you know... interactions with other people. This? Probably hits too close for comfort for actual loners out there.

Think this classifies as a dark comedy which the closest I can relate to (but still different) is Welcome to the NHK.

In saying that though, there were moments where it tried a bit too hard e.g. That Death Note copy bit with the mouse. I lold at that.

The comparison is not even close...
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai is a harem show in disguise. Yahari is about people who prefer lonliness. This show is about an unpopular girl. She looks like a vampire. She dresses like a goth. Her look is not ugly. If she looks ugly, it will turn away many viewers. The story looks more like guy's view on a hikomori girl.

Laughed my ass off at this first episode. Surprisingly, I always had friends, so it wasn't really hard to watch it.

Will be following this one. Hope she actually gets a friend by the end of the season.

Actually, I think she's cute ! :O
I don't understand why people says she's ugly...

This first episode is really really interesting. I can totally relate about myself when I started High School. No friends at all.

I don't get it myself. Even in the show she's considered by her brother to be average (which I would say is high praise from, of all people, her little brother). She's really not ugly, she just doesn't take care of herself. To be honest, her disheveled hair is kind of cute.

Also, that first picture: Yoink

I too think she's cute. Maybe she'd be really pretty if she took better care of herself (and the fan art definitely seems to prove that), but as she is in the show, I don't think she's that unattractive, either.

Tomoko is certainly cute-she just needs to catch up on her sleep to get rid of those bags. More than ugly, she only looks a bit unhealthy, that's all.
JUST DON'T MAKE THAT DUCK-FACE.

Interesting story and lovable characters, with that I mean both siblings. It is kind of funny that the young of them two seems to be the more mature one, despite being male, as normally you would assume that the female sibling to be the more mature one.

The funny thing is maybe those dark circles are hereditary, because her brother has it too?
