Whale of a tale! 40-ton mammal lands on yacht

A South African couple was out sailing near the country's infamous Robben Island when a 40-ton whale breached and crash-landed on their yacht.

"We were watching the whale flipping its tail for about half an hour," said Cape Town Sailing Academy Administrator Paloma Werner, who was enjoying a Sunday sail with her boyfriend and sailing instructor, Ralph Mothes.

"It reached about 100 to 200 meters from us, then it disappeared under water and reappeared about 10 to 20 meters from the boat, but we didn't think we were on a collision course," she told msnbc.com.

The young Southern Right Whale was longer than their 10-meter yacht — most likely between 11 and 14 meters — Werner said.

"My boyfriend told me to go to the other side of the boat," she said, explaining that they thought it would dive under their vessel.

"All I heard him say was 'Oh sh*&,' and I saw the whale come out of the water and crash against the mast of the boat.

"I ducked behind the coach house and my boyfriend ducked behind the steering wheel and we saw the mast crashing toward us and the whale slip back into the water," she said.

"Bits of black whale blubber and barnacles," were strewn on the boat deck, but the couple did not see any blood in the water.

"The whale might have gotten a scratch and a bump on its head, but it surfaced again, so we don't think it was harmed," she said.

Adrenalin propelled Werner and Mothes through the next few minutes of checking the structure the boat for damage and leaks. Fortunately, the steel vessel did not take on any water and they were able to navigate it back into Table Bay Harbor.

"Only that evening did we really think about it, and when we saw the photo (taken by a tourist in a nearby boat) in yesterday's paper did we realize we were lucky to be alive," Werner said.

"If it would have crashed into the cockpit it would have sunk the boat."

Zaver Rathod, 35, killed the reptile by hurling stones at it after it bit one of his friends in Surat, in the eastern state of Gujurat, The Times of India reported today.

Egged on by his companions, the farm labourer then consumed the entire snake raw for a 100 Rupee bet ($2.42).

However, he soon fell violently ill and was rushed to the hospital yesterday with severe nausea and vomiting.

Doctors managed to remove the contents of his stomach before the snake's venom could enter his blood stream, which would almost certainly have proved fatal.

Mr Rathod fled today to escape the glare of the Indian media, as reporters descended on the hospital to interview him.

Doctors expect him to recover, The Times of India said.

Officials have not disclosed what type of snake he ate.

TV presenter chokes on mosquito, lands in hospital

Taipei (July 21, Wed): A Taiwanese television presenter was hospitalised after a mosquito flew into her mouth, choking her and interrupting her live broadcast of a news programme.

The mosquito got so deep into Ms Huang Ching's mouth that it was stuck in her windpipe, setting off severe asthma, China Times media group said today.

"I never expected a mosquito to have such a great power. It really gave me a bad day," Ms Huang said after recovering from last week's unlikely interruption.

The senior anchor spent a day in hospital.

Paul has a new job: Helping to save sea turtles

Oberhausen, Germany (July 22, Thu): Psychic octopus Paul — still basking in the glory of his perfect World Cup predictions — is heading off to a new job as a fundraiser for sea turtles.

The Sea Life aquarium in Oberhausen, where the octopus lives, announced today that Paul now has an agent and will be using his name to help endangered turtles on the Greek island of Zakynthos. "It's a great chance for an animal to help other animals," said Mr Chris Davis, Paul's agent.

Mr Yannis Vardakastanis of the environmental group Earth, Sea and Sky promised he will never eat octopus again if Paul raises enough money to build a rescue station for the turtles.

"And everyone knows what that means for me, because there are no other people who like to eat octopus as much as the Greeks," he said.

Darth Vader Robs Bank

It seems the Empire has fallen on hard times. Presumably to get finishing funds for his latest Death Star, Darth Vader—or a man pretending to be Darth Vader?—was reduced to robbing a bank on Long Island this morning. Impotent Rebel Alliance security forces tell Newsday (paywall) that Vader marched into a Chase bank in Setauket around 11:30 a.m. today. Brandishing a completely unnecessary handgun—as he had the power to choke the oxygen out every teller's throat—the fallen Jedi demanded cash.

It's unclear whether he also found their lack of faith disturbing, but one Rebel policeman says, "The teller complied with the robber's demands and gave him money from the drawer." Vader is described as 6 feet, 2 inches tall, also wearing camouflage pants, and was last seen boarding a starfighter headed in the direction of Long Island's sinister Sith stronghold, in Valley Stream.
