mkv or avi

so im wondering what so diffrent between mkv and avi ?? and wich is better

Matroska is better. (Actually, it kinda depends on what you want to do with the file. Most(?) hardware players do not support Matroska, thus AVI would be a better option, if you intend to watch your videos on a hardware player. If you want H.264, AVI is a bad option.)
