Funimation released episode one a week early here: https://www.funimation.com/shows/moriarty-the-patriot. Rather dark premise and one that fits with zztop's observation that class conflict is the motivating factor.

You have to be a subscriber I believe.

This is the "Special first-look version" for subscribers only. Next week they will follow the calendar normally, at least it seems: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...-anime/.164831

Certainly better than the Kabukicho version.

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

Not big on the OP but I like the ED.

As for the content, it's pretty good. The ep established the Moriartys nicely. Need more episodes to get better grasp on them.

Never have been a fan of the anachronism of "Victorian Bishonen", but that was quite a nice dark tale. I'm probably going to end up dropping it for being another "good but not great" anime since I have no investment in Sherlock Holmes but I don't mind giving it a chance.

Any additional content compared to the preview, or just the same?

Main content is still the same IIRC. Did the preview have OP and preview for episode 2 like this one?

When I saw this episode about the blonde Moriarty Bros backstory, Seto and Mokuba's backstory really came to my mind. And considering Seto also tried hard to bring joy to the world by changing the Kaiba Corporation from a wretched arms dealer to a family-friendly high-tec toy manufacturer by any means necessary, I can't help but draw the comparison to this future Moriarty. But I guess the would-be-William Moriarty got a better deal than the would-be-Seto Kaiba since the Moriarty senior already intended to adopt an orphan or two while Seto had to force Gozaburo Kaiba to a challenge for his and Mokuba's adoption. Was the mangaka really not inspired by Yu-Gi-Oh! for this part of the story? Or was this Moriarty's orphan adoption backstory originally came from Conan Doyle back then?

I think the whole "talented lower caste child adopted into nobility" is a common enough trope to be honest. Beastars, Joker Game, Legend of Arslan and Legend of the Galactic Heroes are just some I can think of off the top of my head.

Was another solid episode though. I guess Moriarty's actions in the previous episode make a lot more sense now. He goes after corrupt and horrible nobles specifically harming the lower caste. I do wonder if the story will wind up being constrained by its murder mystery roots though: with a motive like that for a main character, I'd expect the show to turn towards a more holistic political drama.

The striking similarity with YGO's Seto & Mokuba is the fact that they are specifically two brothers in the orphanage (the older one being the smarter/stronger one) being adopted to a high-class family and then aggressively try to change things from within a wretched group of people in society. The fact that they will meet their arch-rival later on in Sherlock & Yami Yugi only cemented the similarity even more. You can even compare the legitimate spoiled-brat brown-haired Moriarty son with Noa Kaiba in the YGO anime if you want .

The core concept is the same, the only major difference being: Seto Kaiba was not the protag in YGO coz he was the rival character (+his assistant-bro ).

To be honest if the theme of this show is "Death to the British Class System!" then I'm behind it 100%. It's got my attention.

There are a crapton of potential mines along the path this series is taking, but the premise is utterly fascinating. And so far the execution is up to the task.
