Thanks for the clarification between San and Bara, as I was somewhat confused by the (still) inadequate english wiki page.

After a night's rest and a day to think about it, I present my blue text (*cue dreamenddischarger):

Spoiler for Anti-fantasy speculation on recurring events + EP5 materials:

1. The mysterious object that Ange sees in Ep. 4 is the portrait of the new girl. It gives Ange the answer to the events surrounding the murders. Namely, it explains what happened to the damaged rose that disappeared. <Insert super mind-twisting explanation of how this proves Witches don't exist>
2. There are less than 17 people on Rokkenjima. Already discussed at length by others.
3a. The new girl explains who Battler is (either she IS him, or is related to him), and explains the sin he committed six years ago.
3b. Battler's sin: he switched places with Asumu's child, similar to Shion/Mion, cursing Asumu's child to abuse/abandonment (ala Takano).
4. The new girl is also the cause of the destruction of the shrine/temple on the outskirts of Rokkenjima, which somehow led to Kinzo's death and a release of hallucinogenic material based on absinthe which causes the appearance/hallucination of witches/demons/sisters. Furthermore, this material's strength increases over time, and that time crosses chess boards, explaining the additional fantasy characters.
5a. The new girl represents the 'Rose' clan (as opposed to the Ushiromiya 'Golden Eagle'). This is the clan that is behind all the murders and deception about the number of people on Rokkenjima. It is made up of Nanjo and Kumasawa's family, and possibly the Sumaderas and Tetsurous, all intent on bringing ruin to the Ushiromiya line (the gold is just a ploy).
5b. Alternate take: The new girl represents Kinzo's wife's line. The family feels cheated out by Kinzo and Beatrice and want to exact revenge. However, they are only responsible for Kinzo's death every episode. The others are killed by a member of the family, a different one each game depending on circumstances/kakera.

Well, that sounded more like a summary of the discussion in this thread, but hopefully my first point turns true, as I was really happy about arriving at it this morning. Can't wait until August to see all of these points blasted to kingdom come and me crouching in a corner bashing my brains out.

about that women/man in the portrait, is it just me, or does it look like they're carrying some sort of staff? It looks a bit to straight compared to the others for it to be a tree. I know that there are the other two straight things on the left side above the chair, but it looks different.

Wouldn't that be a huuuuuuge staff? If you take a close look to the perspective it seems a bit odd to me? Looks like the staff would be very thick if that's the case.

since the small girl has blue hair, she is either:
a) kanon-beatrice, since ark blue and black can be mistaken.
b) nanjo-beatrice, he had blue hair when he was young.

I'm actually not very supportive of the idea of a male witch... because you'd probably call him a sorceror or something. Plus it feels as if that the very idea of the witch linked to the form of Beato makes it exclusively a female issue.

Unless we're talking about say androgyny or hermaphroditism, and that's just creepy.

In Witch Hunter Robin the term "witch" was used for male too, but yeah I agree with you. And the Nanjo-Beatrice idea is quite disturbing unless that "Nanjo" is actually terumasa's granddaughter.

I assume you're joking, but it's still not the most ridiculous thing I've heard about this girl... well, okay it is, but not by much.

Baseless speculation is baseless... how are you people coming up with Natsuhi-Beatrice and young Kyrie? She looks NOTHING like them and there aren't even the slightest clues towards them being directly connected.

Maybe kyrie is also very old and that's why her hair turned white, she does not have to be that old either, if she got lucky genes, as a friend of mine already had white-gray hair in junior high.

since I can listen to the anime, they use a term that sounds like maho- majo for the withces, which I have heard used in other animes to reference magicians regardless of sex, I am waiting for someone who know japanese to explain that.
