She's the devil to Madoka's goddess. She actually calls herself a devil when Kyuubei asks her what she is. Edit: Sayaka calls her that too.

I don't know. She seems to be above devils or gods. What she's doing is pretty selfish though so you could say she's evil.

When I say devil, I'm not talking about her powerlevel, but where she stands now in the Madokaverse. If Madoka is god, then Homura is the devil.

And yeah, she seems pretty evil now. Her laugh when she was torturing Sayaka (at least that's what I assume happens based on the audio) gave me the chills. She's probably more crazy than evil though. She basically went full yandere in this movie. What I'd love to know is how she managed to get powers greater than that of a god. This seems like a complete diabolicus ex machina, and that's bad.

By the way, Sayaka is alive at the end of the movie. I don't know where that bit about Homura erasing her comes from.

Isn't that when she's becoming witch? She even says that she hates Madoka in the scene I think. You shouldn't take that as her "normal" personality.

Supposedly, at the end. I didn't check the audio yet (though I already have it) but I don't think you would be to tell. Supposedly, Sayaka is already a witch and Homukami just appear out of nowhere and erases her. There's probably no dialog in that scene. So again, I didn't check the audio yet, so I could be totally wrong.

Spoiler for the rebellion story:

So, at some point, Homura reachs the point of no return and her soul gem is about to be collected by Madoka. QB uses some shady alien tech to stop this, but he inadvertently traps Madokami inside Homura's soul gem in the process.

So, the movie takes place inside a barrier. Homura fights because, in order to break the barrier and free Madoka she needs to create suffering (this is really screwed up).

Homura is about to succeed but she begins to turn into a witch.

Anyway, the other girls + Nagisa fight witch Homura. They defeat her and the barrier finally breaks as Homura planned.

We're back in the real world and the world resets, Madoka is restored as God and Homura is about to die. This is the epilogue, and when things begin to turn really really weird:


Madoka appears to purify Homura, but Homura tells her to stop as she reaches out to the soul gem. Homu grabs Madoka's hand, the soul gem blackens, the planet blackens, the universe blackens. Homu crush the soul gem by biting it, creating a new object. QB asks her what she is doing. Homu tells him that this is what he will never understand, love.

Homura now is neither witch nor magical girl. Then there's a scene where it seems that Homura destroys QB, like for good.

The scene changes:

Sayaka becomes Mermaid Witch (the world has reset, remember). Homura makes the witch disappears with a clap, she states that she is greater than God.

Homura vanishes.

The scene changes:

Madoka is a Japanese returning from USA. The entire story is inversed, Madoka is the transfer student now. Homura (she's god) takes Madoka to the infirmary. Madoka feels wrong midway and starts turning into God Madoka. Homu reversed it by hugging her (with her own god powers Homu is suppressing Madoka's god powers). Homu is using her design at the end of the TV series throughout this scene. Homu returns the ribbon to Madoka, says it fits well.

Homu asks Madoka which is more important: The state of the world or someone's happiness? Madoka feels that being selfish is wrong. Homu then tells Madoka that they will become enemies one day. Madoka is shocked. END.

Notes: It seems Homura with bow and wings fighting for Madoka's world was retconned, or happened way before the time this movie takes place. Probably the latter. Also, it's not clear if Dark God Homura is collecting soul gems like Madoka was doing before. I think she does but it's unclear from the shit spoilers I read.

Pretty fucked up, especially the last part. It not only feels weird but also pretty unnecessary.

Homu gives the impression that she thought Madoka is behind her.

Homu stands up and starts dancing. ???
Her marking at the back of her hand floats up.
QB is destroyed.
Next scene, Homu sitting on a chair falls from the cliff.
Last scene, close up of QB's eyes. They are cloudy.

No, that scene takes place after she gains her godly powers and right before she remakes the world.

In my view it's not that Homura is as selfish bitch but basically the entire movie is dedicated to twisting her into one.

It's like QB went overboard and finally managed to break her so hard that she became a twisted shell of her former self.

On another note, this movie goes to show that Urobuchi can't write dynamic characters (or doesn't want to). His characters never really grow, emotionally speaking. At most, they might go back to what they were in the past, but they don't evolve (positively, I mean). Homura was selfish and she keeps being selfish. She's stuck. Every character in this series is stuck.

It's a shame because I was hoping against hope he would let Homura grow, overcome her obsession with Madoka and such.

2. What is the reception to the movie so far in Japan itself? Nobody here seems that pleased with it, but I'm curious to know if the reception is any better in Japan.

Madokami was captured in Homura's soulgem by incubators.
Homura have to save Madoka by transforming herself into a witch.
Big part of the movie(probably all trailers that we saw) is Homura's witch world.
So everything that Homura done is for Madoka's sake, she finally saved her.
Homukami appears only after magical girls defeats Homulilly???
I think Homura is not that selfish, but evil.
