Shana's new volume (XIII) just came out too. It's interesting to compare Shana with this novel. It's hard to believe, but Shana is actually far less volatile than Louise. (At least Shana doesn't rear spin kick the Yuuji's crotch )

You won't be disappointed with Chronicle. If you can make it through the first volume (the writing might take some adjusting to, but you will get used to it), you'll find a really deep and interesting novel. The humor is just to my liking too, I love how every single person (and I mean every single one) in the novel is capable of being both a tsukkomi and boke. ^^; The characters are amazing too, unlike most novels, where the "main cast" is pretty much determined from the beginning, new people keep showing up all the time in this novel. On top of that, they're all so lovable. ^^

I'm halfway through volume 2 of Toaru, its not bad, but I would put it on pause in a heartbeat to read volume 9 of ZnT.

Shana's new volume (XIII) just came out too.

Whew, that reminds me that catching up on shana is going to be a long road. If I order one volume a month then I still wont have caught up by this time next year.

You won't be disappointed with Chronicle.

In any case, I finished vol.9. The spoiler tabs all contain vol.9 contents, so don't read them unless you already read the volume/don't mind.

This volume proved once again why people call Yamaguchi-san the best writer when it comes to tsundere. Louise's tsundere-ism is unparalleled.

Anyway, I agree with (MOON PHASE's) cyan-san when he said that this volume is filled with developments that's going to attract either a lot of positive or negative reviews. Personally, there are a lot of parts that were very fun and entertaining to read. But on the downside, some of the developments really disappointed me.

To be fair, this was a great volume overall, despite the disappointing parts, I really enjoyed it. If the anime covered up to vol.8. This volume would've been perfect as a 2-hour movie (the last portion of the volume would've made a great finale).

The new developments were interesting, mainly because it focused on Saito for once.

Spoiler:

Saito finally becoming a chevalier was certainly big, but not unexpected. Saito and Guiche becoming the captains of the "Undine" knights also meant that Saito's beginning to climb the noble ladder too.

It's also quite clear by now that Saito's love is Louise. If Tiffania didn't barge into their room in the beginning there, I'm not sure if there would be anything left to stop them from "joining as one". ^^;

Saito's growth is quite significant, you can tell that he's certainly getting better at handling relationships. He's also getting better at putting himself in seriously bad situations that usually ends with his crotch getting roundhouse-kicked and his face trampled, but that's beside the point. ^^;

Montmorency's advice to Louise later on is a little predictable, but it just might help Louise "last" a little longer against Saito. Although I can see that mistrust and insecurity is what's going to stop Louise from making that leap.

There were quite a few rofl moments in the volume too. Yamaguchi-san's humor at it's best.

Part where Saito was unknowningly sexually assulted by Louise and Siesta while he's asleep was グッド too. Siesta's reverse-sexual-harassment was daring, but Louise's tongue thing was just criminal.

Now that I think about it, good job sleeping through that, Saito-san.

For the most part, the volume's focus remained on Saito's new status and Louise's own feelings. But the last part did push the story forward a bit, with the "enemy" finally making her move again. The thing with Tabitha... well, the development was interesting, but it looks like it'll be a while before we can learn her full story.

Colbert-sensei revival!!

Speaking of which, Colbert-sensei is quickly becoming one of the coolest middle-aged baldy teacher I have ever seen. Kirche's non-directional love is quite fearsome too. ^^;

Now then, to the disappointing parts.

To begin with, this is a Louise-centered volume, no doubt about it. The spotlight is on Louise, to a point where the other heroines are practically being shunned. For Louise-fans, this is not a problem. But for fans of other heroines (especially Henrietta), it leaves a bit of a bad aftertaste.

To begin with, Tiffania left the stage after only 1 volume. Of course, she'll definitely be back again in the future, but it's still a little disappointing to see her leave so soon. Then again, considering her situation, this is probably better than having her tag along with some bad excuse just for the sake of creating a harem situation. It would've been nice to learn a little bit more about what she thinks of Saito though.

Siesta was... well, not bad. She did get quite a bit of stage time (even becoming Chevalier Saito's personal maid), and we learned about her new hidden interest in shojo novels. Her moves are as bold as ever, but her unconcerning attitude is making me a little worried.

Henrietta. Now, this is probably just my ideal talking, because Henrietta is whoever Yamaguchi-san wants her to be, but I just can't help but feel that Henrietta is being used as nothing but a tool to cause conflict between Saito and Louise (which eventually helps their bond become deeper). Making Henrietta the "innocent (clueless) princess" is a great touch, because it shows that she's really not as wise and mature as we believed her to be. At the same time though, it puts her at a real disadvantage: those who never really liked Henrietta will dislike her even more now, and those who liked her will feel like she's getting the short end of the stick. She was doing so well when she first appeared too. But by the end, she looked like an addict who just couldn't quit a bad habit.

Even Tabitha got shortchanged here a bit. Her mission was to kill Saito, and everything went well at first. Saito's one heartful line touched her enough to make her change her mind. But the "I was saved by you. I offer you my life" thing was just too much. Considering that her reward for eliminating Saito is the precious cure for her mother's illness, Tabitha's attitude here felt way too flip-flop.

Now then, the setup for the journey East is complete. But considering Saito's new duties, I wonder if he can make that trip anytime soon... Next volume would be nice.

Im truely torn as to whether or not to read it immediately or wait until I finish Owari first.
I know that Ill just end up in withdrawal symptoms again, with many months to wait for a new book.

On the bright side, apparently there is going to be a Tabasa Gaiden released october 25th. Looks like there will at least be something tasty to tide me over

I don't usually get withdrawals myself because there's always something else for me to read. Besides, Zero is the kind of novel that tends to end cleanly after every volume, so you don't have to worry about cliffhangers much.

Although I will admit that vol.9, despite having a really good start, left a pretty bad aftertaste when it ended (see my comments above, after you're finished too I guess).

Well, I did mention the bad aftertaste thing in my vol.9 post up there. Although I suppose it's not intolerable if you're not a Henrietta fan. I simply didn't like how certain heroines got "used" just for the sake of testing (and ultimately strengthening) Louise and Saito's bond, that's all. It's almost as if Louise is the only main heroine, and all the other girls are really just supporting roles after all (which isn't wrong per se, but still).

When I'm down with a cold, the only thing I can do is read books (looking at computer or TV monitors will make my head hurt), so for me, catching a cold is actually great for light novel readings. ^^;

But yeah, although I would argue that Owari no Chronicle is so much more than just a SF novel (the SF was never my focus anyway), there's still a lot of SF contents in it. I didn't get used to the story's setting myself until maybe 6 or 7 chapters into the first book. I guess it's the manzai between Itaru and Sf that pulled me through.

Really though, I guess it depends on what you're looking for. For me, stories where there's "love born from strange circumstances" is always interesting, and in that respect, Owari no Chronicle fits the bill perfectly. It's also interesting because Mikoto is definitely not your typical "generic" male protagonist, and has a very clear cut (sometimes perverted ^^; ) personality. So rather than wasting a bunch of time trying to portray the male protagonist's feelings, like most light novels do, you get more time to enjoy the character interactions in Owari no Chronicle instead (which is half tsukkomis most of the time ).

Yes! At first I was leery, I didnt want to hear some deus ex machina about him coming back from the dead. But the explanation was so lovely and simply! Kyuruke simply tricked Anies! Well done back-from the dead scene, I loved it.

Well, she didnt get alot of time on stage, but she certainly got alot of action.
She was on the verge of rounding the bases with Saito, if only the magic had
lasted a moment longer he seemed to be of a mind to go all the way right there
on the balcony. (understandable with the way he's been getting teased so badly)

I was upset that he voluntarily kissed Henrietta once he knew who she was though- no matter how cute she is thats not forgivable. I suppose you see that differently if you are cheering for Henrietta....

I felt she liked saito in a very platonic way- they didnt have enough time to delevop it into anything more, and he already has a harem.
I'm glad she stayed behind though, it would have been terrible if she abandoned all those orphans like that. Her choice to stay made her that much more attractive to me.

Hrm, well since her bout of insanity, then her war of revenge period, I don't think this trend is anything new. She has been an emotional train wreck pretty much the whole time.

She's still an interesting character, and I enjoy her speech and mannerisms.
Perhaps she is merely a plot tool, much as nosebleeds, neko-mimi, sailor suits, and all the other cliche props that are trotted out are.... I'm still curious to see what her next move is though. Will she give up on Saito because of louise? (with the slapping she made it pretty clear she doesnt approve) Or will she make another move...?

Seeing him down, she simply couldnt bring herself to kill him.
Its one of those moments where you have to decide.

I agree that the "giving him her life" thing was a bit sudden, but it matches her かし/かりstyle. He basically gave up his life to not harm her, so she was willing to die to help him save ruizu.

I guess now that that is done, she seems to feel they are even, and has gone off on her own personal quest again.

He's reservations at the end meant to me that he thinks there are important things to be done. If he goes off on a personal adventure with the kingdoms in tatters like this, it wouldnt seem right to me.

Forgive me for the shameless plug here, but Saito and Henrietta's little rub there is like childplay compared to some of the 何だかよくわかんないけどテラエロス situations in OwaKuro.

As for Saito's response, I don't blame him, he's only human. A healthy 17 (18 now?) years old male one at that. Even though Saito's "girl of choice" is clear, it doesn't mean his affections for the others girls are gone. Considering the kind of guy Saito is, I'm not surprised he got sunk by the "wounded deer with teary eyes" attack. ^^;

Oh, but as a Henrietta supporter, I'm obliged to say "of course, she's not doing it on purpose".

I'm guessing Yamaguchi-san decided it's a better idea to settle the Louise x Saito front first, since they just got back together, and save Tiffania's entry for a later time.

I'm sure Tiffania won't abandon the children, if she is to leave the village and join Saito, it will be after she has taken care of the "child care" issue. ^^; When I said "bad excuse", I was referring to something like "leaving the children to another caretaker who conveniently appeared" or "bringing everyone to the academy".

Unless there's a good reason for Tiffania to leave the village, I don't mind her being absent. (Although it's unfortunate to lose such a good Mikuru character like her )

You have to give her credit for trying to get out of the dump that she's in. It seems to me like she's just a victim of circumstances + having really bad luck. Almost typical of a tragedy heroine. The kind of things that she experienced probably could have turned anyone into a wreck, not to mention she was only an innocent princess when it all began. Losing Wales was traumatizing enough, I can't even imagine what it's like to suddenly have the burden of running an entire country through such volatile times dropped onto her shoulders. The novel never really talked about any of this, but I'm surprised she hasn't collapsed yet.

That's why I don't blame her for being so weak emotionally, she's pretty much about as tattered as it gets. But I guess it still doesn't change the fact that what she ends up doing often puts her in a worse place than before. I just hope Yamaguchi-san can cut her some slack already, this is getting really sad.

I don't disagree with her decision, I'm just a little taken back by the suddeness of her statement, that's all. It's really more of a question of "couldn't this be presented in a better way?" than anything else.

Oh, I have no doubt that Siesta is still in the runnings, what upset me was that her statement meant she was aware of and admits that she is at a disadvantage here. Regardless of whether or not she actually said it out of her true feelings, the fact that Siesta confirms herself to be in 2nd place saddens me, that's all. ^^;

I can tell you this, it gets even... er... well, let's just say: forget first or second base, Mikoto got to bases I didn't even knew existed.

Just in case you're worried about the "direction" of this novel, you don't have to. ^^; Even with all these comical/strangely erotic scenes, the story is just as serious and deep as usual. The world mythologies that each Gear is based on certainly becomes rather interesting as you learn more about them. I'm finishing up 3rd-G right now, and its quite fascinating really.

Even though they're recorded on the same medium, English literature has almost nothing in common with Japanese light novels. I think you know what I mean so I don't have to explain.
