Berners-Lee: 'Growing tide of surveillance' is destroying the internet:

"Tim Berners-Lee has warned that snooping spooks are destroying the free spirit of
the internet.

He said a "growing tide of surveillance and censorship" was drowning the
democratic nature of the web."

China's 1st Moon Rover Launches On Lunar Journey:

"China's first-ever mission to land a rover on the moon has begun its
journey to the lunar frontier.

Riding atop a modified Long March 3B rocket, China's Chang'e 3 moon
lander and its rover Yutu toward the moon at 1:30 a.m. Monday (Dec. 2)
local time from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in the country's
Sichuan province. It was 12:30 p.m. EST (1730 GMT) on Dec. 1 at launch
time.

If the probe continues on track, Chang'e 3 will land on the lunar
surface by mid-December, becoming the first spacecraft to touch down
on the moon in more than 37 years. The moon landing mission was the
former Soviet Union's robotic Luna 24 sample return mission in 1976."

Indian spacecraft leaves Earth's orbit, bound for Mars:

"India's Mars orbiter mission left Earth's sphere of influence early Sunday after
performing a maneuver to put it on its way to orbit the red planet.

The spacecraft fired its main engine for more than 20 minutes to reach the correct
velocity to leave the Earth's orbit, the Bangalore-based Indian Space Research
Organization said.

"The Earth orbiting phase of the spacecraft ended. The spacecraft is now on a
course to encounter Mars after a journey of about 10 months around the sun," the
statement said."

Amazon testing drones for deliveries

Quote:
Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, is testing unmanned drones to deliver goods to customers, according to Chief Executive Jeff Bezos.

The drones, called Octocopters, could deliver packages weighing up to 2.3kg to customers within 30 minutes of them placing the order, he said.

However, he added that it could take up to five years for the service to start.

The US Federal Aviation Administration is yet to approve the use of unmanned drones for civilian purposes.

"I know this looks like science fiction, but it's not," Mr Bezos told CBS television's 60 Minutes programme.

"We can do half-hour delivery... and we can carry objects, we think, up to five pounds (2.3kg), which covers 86% of the items that we deliver."
Well, they can do some good I guess...

People have already tested delivering pizzas using drones. I can only imagine this service will spur on the development of drones capable of carrying even heavier loads, but the ability to deliver small packages in half an hour is a great start.

I wouldn't read too much into this, it's mostly marketing for now. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that Bezos is the evil genius capable of pulling it off () but for now it's just a brilliant marketing move that put everyone talking about Amazon just in time for the big holiday shopping rush. Now THAT is true genius.

I'm afraid it'll stay in the realm of "we can't have nice things", with people shooting down the drones...

Odon childbirth device: Car mechanic uncorks a revolution

Quote:
A "potentially revolutionary" device to help women during difficult births has come from an unlikely source - a car mechanic from Argentina, who based the idea on a party trick.
Simple, yet revolutionary...

Well, right off the bat I doubt they'll launch the service in states that allow one to shoot down drones. That'll help curb that a little bit, at least.

How about those stuff stay in the air and launch the CO2-propelled parcels through kitchen windows, the way the Predator drone fires it Hellfire missiles?

If you go that way, one will try to use guided rockets... and end up in the red because the rockets are one use only.

Right, then we have a hover capability and a powerful spring-load/airblast assisted gun that fires the parcels through windows at the desired floor.

I don't think any state allows you to just shoot other people's property. The problem is that people are horrible. Not all of them, obviously, but enough of them.

Why don't we have a overflight Predator drone that shoots back at the people shooting at the drone
(joke of course)

OHM MY GOD! Move over graphene, here comes '100% PERFECT' stanene:

"A US, Chinese, and German research team has come up with a new material
dubbed "stanene" that could – theoretically, at least – conduct electricity with "100
percent efficiency" at temperatures at which computer chips operate, raising the
tantalizing possibility of highly efficient future chippery.

"Stanene could increase the speed and lower the power needs of future
generations of computer chips, if our prediction is confirmed by experiments that are
underway in several laboratories around the world," said research team leader
Shoucheng Zhang, physics professor at Stanford University."

How much better would superconducting computer chips be than regular chips?
