There's a recent Russian anime that's animated by a Japanese company. It follows the efforts of a Soviet paranormal group (so theres some fantasy) to help win a crucial battle against the Germans. It's got really nice visuals and a fair amount of tactics going on, but I'll warn you that the characters and plot are average to put it nicely.
EDIT: How could I forget the name? It's called "First Squad". |

28 posts in and not a single person mentions Fullmetal Alchemist for a military anime? Wow.
Anyway, I'm not a fan of shounen anime at all but my was really insistant on Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, so I gave it a shot and now it's one of my favorite titles. The plot twists are countless, the cast is huge and very well developed, the characters all have their own agendas, the story doesn't stray from the plot, and with 63 episodes, it only has 1 filler episode. I hear Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) was really good too. The difference is that the 2003 version didn't follow the manga. |

The way Riza kept in touch with Roy even after the King Bradley repositioned her was pretty clever. The way Father was manipulating the bloodsheds to spill in certain areas of the country to form a transmutation circle was "tactical". Ed thinking on his feet during fights was pretty creative as well (fighting Scar, Greed 1.0, Giant Envy, the killer brothers from the abandoned facility the beginning, etc). |

Anyway if the TS wanted to I also recommend that one since it's a military with some tactics involved but not present as always.

I have seen both series and loved both specialy berserk. I have also seen FMA / Brotherhood those series we're really a nice watch. But what i ment with tactics is like this: Armies trying engaging each other with tactical strategies like in the movie Braveheart where Mel Gibson orders the horseman to run away to engage from behind (in the first big fight) Or in the movie We we're soldiers we're Mel Gibson and his comm officer are coordinating airplane and artillerie strikes on groups of enemies. Sending soldiers to reinforce the flanks That is what i ment with tactics. I have given real life movies as a example but im looking for tactics in anime ofcourse. Currently watching Valkria Chronicles, it looks very nice and has some tactics in it. Just small thing bothering me that they dont take being underfire serious and the girly thing the lead player has. Still a nice serie to watch and not to long either. |

The Patlabor movies, even though they have some mechs, use quite a few tactics and have many scenes where people are planning stuff out. The second one is better but they're both pretty good IMO.
Sorry for only recommending movies so far; have you tried Library War (Toshokan Senso) or Yugo the Negotiator? The latter isn't that good but it's got some tactics in it. |
