The last of us

Well just finished the game. I have to say it really did live up to my expectations and was a good time. Hard was pretty tough at times, but also satisfying to beat the game under.

There really is that tricky balance with supplies. By the end was in a bit of odd situation of having conserved quite a bit of ammo, but almost none of crafting materials.

Yeah, just wanted to talk about this. Figured now was a good time to actually come into the thread .

Will say in regards to the discussion above I did find some collectables that pretty much stated they had other immune people go through 'surgery' and still hadn't figured it out. Seemed to be sacrificing Ellie in that place would have accomplished absolutely nothing. At that point I think the Fireflies were at the stage of "maybe this time we'll get enough data to figure it out."

Of course that wouldn't change my opinion about what needed to be done there. I was 100% behind Joel on this one. Like hell I was going to let these people sacrifice Ellie for a chance at a vaccine. Certainly can go with the "if we have to sacrifice an innocent to save humanity then it isn't worth saving." But really my main opinion was that for Joel this was another daughter's life on the line and he wasn't going to fail twice.

He was always going to leave that place with her and in this case he had to fight to make it happen. It just felt like the right thing to do. Ellie deserved a chance to live out her life, not give it up for the kind of people we'd met on this journey. Ellie and Joel helped each other through that journey. When Joel could have easily been left for dead she went through hell to save him. That mutual bond lead him to do the exact same to save her. As for Marlene, the moment she betrayed her promise to take care of Ellie I didn't care much about what happened to her.

I have to say in a sense plenty of what Joel told Ellie was true. There were others immune, they just weren't alive anymore. And after killing Marlene, plenty of members, along with some of the medical staff they may very well abandon looking for a cure. I do think not telling her the whole truth was for the best. A kid already suffering from survivors guilt just wouldn't be able to make the choice to keep living. In a sense Joel had to protect Ellie from her own guilt. She most likely knew he wasn't telling her the whole story, but that regardless of what happened he acted because he cares about her. That in itself should be enough.

A well done game. And have to say it's nice for once in a game this serious that we can leave at the end with the main characters alive. Enough of this main characters must die in some tragic scene stuff. Frankly living after what they'd been through is enough of a trial.

Lol, me too. I know Joel was in his "kill everyone" mode, but those doctors just looked too defenseless. I also didn't kill that guy well in the beginning that was stuck under the debris who begged me to save his life, even though I thought he might come back to haunt me.

The guy that busted his oxygen mask, playing in survivor mode, so I didn't waste a bullet, but in the first playthrough I did kill him.

As for the doctors, I shot only guy with the scalpel on the hand and he died and went for Ellie immediately to get out of there.
Gonna try to see if you can go through without killing the doctors.

Just finished the game. Loved it. There were some parts that I think it was dragged out, like with human enemies that I think it could have been less. I also expected more puzzles then simply grab a ladder and put it on the wall so you can climb.

The end surprised me, I was sure one of them would die. But anyway, It really makes you think. Joel may have made a selfish thing, but in all honestly, a majority would do the same. I mean if the cure is made, I think that Fireflies would just sell the cure. And from what I see in the game, bandits and lowlifes makes the most of humanity and one would think if humanity needs a salvation. Other then that, as much as he did for Ellie's sake I think that Joel saved her cuz' to save himself as well. He needs her to continue living. Or at least thats kind of impression I get. ^^

The problem to me is that the Fireflies seemed really unreliable, even without finding out about other immune, listening to the tapes made me see how fractured and desperate they all were. If they were to he the light of humanity, then things are even more bleak than one thinks. Marlene admitted to losing the morale and the group being a hairs breadth from splitting up, so what if Ellie's sacrifice is in vain? They just don't seem like they could take another failure, and in this world, you need to have the brass balls to move forward. Not only that, they are being hunted by the military, which is corrupt, as well as very lax security, seeing as their research facility fell really easily, even with lots of guards and a solid compound like the university.

I won't say Joel was "right", but I do think he thought about the decision, before Marlene had him kicked out at gunpoint (really now Marlene? The guy made it going cross country and you kick him out with no food, weapons, or supplies, and no reward?) but they almost killed Ellie by not letting Joel use CPR on her. That group is in shambles, and I have no doubt he saw that. The guy ushering Joel out seems like the type to sell out the vaccine to the corrupt military and betray the cause, and they are likely to have more men like that due to just plain strained alliances and loss of hope.

People easily talk about the greater good, but honestly, when I hear that, it is rarely with any foresight or calm reasoning, so that is something I see as being what was weighing in Joel's mind thought it, not just about Ellie. She was the strongest part of the equation, but not the only part.

The greater good here is endure and survive. Glad alot of people are taking a second look at the situation and not just judging Joel for his final actions.

Yeah Marlene was ungrateful she even said most of his men died crossing the country, but they survive it's like sarcasm at it's finest and no reward a gun at your back and GTFO we're making a cure and kill off Ellie.

Yeah the fireflies are no better than those canibal hunters. I'll stick with Tommy those are the real survivors. This is one of the reason why we need a 3rd faction. Those who endure and survive like Tommy did.

When you look at the artifacts from her on the very end of the game, it did annoy me that she referred at Joel and Tess as just "those smugglers" rather than their names. I understand they weren't really close, but in the beginning when they meet and get the mission, it did seems to me as they at least knew each other better. Those artifacts made me think Marlene just saw them as nothing, a mean to and end and didn't really care the least about them.

So I really didn't feel anything bad when Joel killed her.

And about Joel character and personality:

After the breakdown, I think most people who weren't willing do get their hands dirty to survive either died or just become paws living of a Q.Z. somewhere and hoping nothing serious would happen there. And between those who were willing, you had those who enjoyed doing so or learned to enjoy, and those who didn't. Now i think the former have a higher chance of survival than the latter, as they won't have a good amount of things pulling up on their conscience.

I think one appeal Joel has to the player, is that while he often kill for necessity, and sometimes for anger and possibly revenge, he never during the game shows to feel pleasure on the act. That does makes he look better on my eyes then many people like David and a good bunch of the Hunters.

Although it's true that many times you fight enemies that were just "doing their job", or in a situation where it was either them or you. So there is definitely some moral issues there everywhere, but I find things like that that makes Joel and a few more characters really likeable even if they're also seasoned killer and the like.

Now just a random musing on those stories we only learn about reading artifacts. I wonder if Ish did survive or not. I remember we do get an artifact and a body that shows that Kyle did die, but as far as I remember we know Ish was able to escape with some people from there, but never know what happened to them afterwards.

"Endure and Survive" reminds me of the British series about nuclear civil defense called Protect and Survive.

I watched Markiplier's videos too. The guy is hilarious, even if his aim sucks. He's still my favorite YouTuber. I watch his vids near-religiously. :XD:

But the end was a tough decision that I don't think any of us could say "I would do so-and-so" since we've never been in that situation (and hopefully never will be).

What I enjoyed most about The Last of Us was that it treated me like a goddamn adult and didn't hold my hand through the entire damn game. I was forced to think on my feet in most situations and, even on my second playthrough, was still challenging and fun. First time through I think I had the problems most people had - tons of ammo but I started to run out of molotovs and improvised bombs. Second time through I balanced my use of supplies vs. ammo better and wasn't so afraid to shiv clickers when I needed to. Both palythroughs I played stealthy except where I absolutely had to go loud and never really worried about my health. I had max healthkits at all times but hardly used them and ended up wishing I had saved my rags for more molotovs (molotovs I went through like a kid goes through candy on Halloween).

Honestly my only complaint about the game was that we didn't get to play as Ellie more. She was better with a bow and relied a lot more on weapons than melee combat (if there are enough bricks, bottles, and melee weapons lying around, Joel can just fisticuffs his way to victory). Some people didn't like it, but I liked how Ellie was neither as physically strong nor as resilient as Joel, so it presented a unique challenge to make your shots count (the 3-shot rifle made me drool a bit) and to not get hit. Attempting to go Rambo and punch my way to victory when you're surrounded by zombies can work with Joel, but Ellie can't take nearly as many hits so trying to melee is akin to committing suicide.

Needless to say, this has been one of the best games I've played in a LONG time. I love a mature story that has truly human moments in it. It also showed the perspective of individuals who were not a superheroes or anything special, but people who simply wanted to protect what mattered to them. In my humble opinion the game deserves all the high praise it's been getting, from gamers and critics alike. It's not often that a game puts story and characterization first. The other great elements of the game (such as the phenomenal graphics considering it was on a PS3) are simply icing on the cake.

I'm going to have to take my cousin out for dinner or something for him letting me borrow his PS3 and this awesome game. It was that good.

this game was stellar. i've played a lot of "the best game of this generation," on narrative alone, this game trumps all of them. it was a mature game that maintained that standard all the way through. the parallel from the beginning to the end of the game was excellently done. the way their relationship developed from start to finish was also amazing. at the end, i was like, "oh my god, which one of you is going to die?!" and thankfully, they didn't write it out like that.

and winter was by FAR the best chapter. it showed the good and bad that comes out in people in a situation like this in one person. plus that chapter made me a ninja with the bow and arrow. easily the best weapon in the game.

and yeah, the first 10 minutes of the game are better than some full fledged titles... browsing the earlier posts in the thread, the tension is palpable when you have to decide how to approach a room of clickers or enemies when you only have 2 shots in your revolver. you quickly learn to use bottles/bricks both as a distraction and as a throw at enemy, one shot them with your melee weapon.
