I reeaallly enjoyed the first episode once I got past the character designs, which didn't really take that long. I guess I haven't watched any mech series since Zegapain, and the dry-spell is over. I was a bit confused by the (pardon the term) Evangelion-ish pilot feedback and ability to use/reassemble a part of an enemy's Gigantic.

Yep, first episode was a good one. But yes the characters take some getting used to. In some scenes they are just plain disturbing. But they're far from badly animated; it was really well done in some scenes. I didn't have any major gripes with the CG mecha, and the battle was exciting and so was the glimpses of the other mechas (and their locations). I'm personally looking forward to see Cynthia and Daniel, the two UK pilots
The soundtrack was awesome too - epic and dramatic. In a couple of places it really helped to stir the emotions in the build up to the sense of impending battle. Very pleased with how this turned out. Looking forward to more. |

I'm glad I'm not the only one who way prefers Koji Yabuno's designs to Kadonosono's original ones in the ED.
Spoiler for rant rant rant:
OK, but it's all just my personal taste anyway You can ignore me now.

Megumi Kadonosono did draw the ED herself actually. So I definitely agree with your point. The characters in the episode itself show so much more emotion than even the original designers animated rendition of them in the ED...
As far as Gotoh, his character designs aside, he's definitely improved as a director at least judging from the first ep of this. Considering he was the one part of this show that made me not look too much forward to it, I was pleasantly surprised. I liked this so much more than I thought I would, so hopefully the rest doesn't let me down |

I certainly prefer the episode designs to the ED. By far. They may look peculiar in some shots, but they do have a great deal of charm. I'm pretty certain most people will run from this the first time they see that close up of Mana in the shrine.
You know I thought for a moment that Susano-o was going to remain a hybrid and that throughout the story it would lose its own parts and gain a piece from each of the other robots it defeats. I was imagining that at the end Susano-o would be some big colourful patchwork of seized parts - the ultimate GF, with each part representing the designer etc... Alas not. |

Yep, I guess I spoke too soon about Susano-o's abilities. Anyway I think it's a fantastic ability to absorb enemies parts and then use that as an advantage, especially with controlling their weapons. The Chinese mecha didn't seem to have this feature, so I wonder if other mecha do or have other types of features that Susano-o hasn't. Either way it makes for a much more exciting situation, with lots of tactical possibilities as the Wisest World War progresses.
Again animation, CG and especially music (I'm loving this soundtrack!) are top notch and I'm really excited by the way the story is developing. In particular the fleshing out of the enemy pilots: giving them personalities, ambitions, political and emotional loyalties really goes a long way to making this feel like more than an shallow mecha slugfest or a showcase for shiny CG *cough* Reideen *cough*. And, um, I do hope Mana does more in this show than just get injured and blush at Shingo all the time. |

a little bit FYI regarding the astrological reference on the mecha's name "玄武柛"

Saw the first episode it was decent it had good animation. I thought the whole explanation of the beginning of the War was rather stupid sounds like the U.N. did it for the heck of it rather weak excuse. The character designs are plain disurbing they look like Aliens or something the eyes... THE EYES!!!
I prefer the ending credits character designs easily over the Alien looking character designs that they used during the episode. I'll probably keep watching this series the first episode was just good enough for me to keep checking it out. |

I like the character designs, lol. They look similar to the ones in Kamichu!
Saw the first episode last night, and it looks to have some promise. The mecha battles look like they might be cool (loved the casual way in which it put on the enemy mech's arm ) |
