There will be no miracle

Cowboy Bebop: Enough said.
Escaflowne: Would be perfect if Hitomi was less emo. Evangelion: The movie made up for the crappy last episodes. Asuka vs the MP Evas is non pareil imo. Shoujo Kakumei Utena: Equivalent mind-screw as Eva but in shoujo form. |

Remembering 80s and 90s Anime!
Hey folks. I was an 80s baby so I grew up watching a lot of the 80s and 90s anime. I have to say, those were the good old days. Lots of great anime during those periods even without the CG technology. Let's reminisce about those times and list some of our favorite animes then. It'll also be a great guide for the younger folks who might be looking for stuff to watch. You might also want to specify the genre or have a one word or short description. Here are my faves and some others I have watched:
------------------------- Ranma 1/2 - comedy Evangelion - mecha Patlabor - mecha Tenchi Muyo - comedy Slayers - fantasy comedy Berserk - action Outlaw Star - sci fi action Hunter x Hunter - action adventure Cowboy Bebop - action. bang! Trigun - old western style action Voltes V - old school mecha Voltron - old school mecha Gundam 08th MS Team - imo, the most realistic Gundam short series Perfect Blue - psychological thriller, young pop star Princess Mononoke - action, fantasy, nature My Neighbor Totoro - coming of age, nature SDF Macross - mecha Macross Plus - mecha Yu Yu Hakusho - action, martial arts Escaflowne - fantasy, adventure, action, mecha Golden Boy - adult comedy Kodomo no Omocha - comedy, kids Ping Pong Club - comedy, crazy, whacky Saber Marionette J - android, action Ghost in the Shell - android, action, sci fi Ghost in the Shell Innocence - android, action, sci fi Kite - action, violence, explicit material Vampire Hunter D - self explanatory Battle Angel Alita - action Gunsmith Cats - action, comedy City Hunter - action, comedy Street Fighter the Movie - action, martial arts Fushigi Yuugi - fantasy, romance Here is Greenwood - comedy, high school Battle Athletes - sports Slam Dunk - basketball, comedy Porco Rosso - airplanes Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - nature, environment Rurouni Kenshin - historical, action Oh My Goddess - comedy, romance There are probably a whole whack more which I've seen but escape me right now. My bad if I've listed something that isn't from the 80s or 90s. Last edited by Bakafool; 2008-09-07 at 16:06. |

EDIT: This post is in response to Bakafool's "Remembering 80s and 90s Anime!", so it includes some 80's anime.
Well, Evangelion, GitS, and Cowboy Bebop are pretty obvious ones. Quote:
Might be my favourite Satoshi Kon work... Millenium actress is up there. Quote:
What about Do You Remember Love? A condensed alternate retelling of SDF Macross with excellent animation, music, and storytelling. Plus definitely had some of the best action scenes in the 90's though. Why not also add on Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura? Two popular magical girl series that appealed to a variety of ages and demographics. And Dragonball, Saint Seiya, Yuu Yuu Hakusho - popular shounen series... Tomino pretty much created the realtype mecha genre with Gundam 0079, though its movies from the early 80's were what ultimately popularised the genre. As much as I hate to admit it, Gundam Wing was really popular... I'm pretty sure Megazone 23's similarites to the Matrix series is no accident, too. The Memories movies were all around great; Yoko Kanno music, excellent animation, and a touch of Satoshi Kon. Top wo Nerae was a hot-blooded supertype-realtype mix that inspired its sequel and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Another of Gainax's popular 80's works was The Wings of Honneamise. Serial Experiments Lain is another of my favourites from the 90's. Last edited by qtipbrit; 2008-09-07 at 22:53. |

Wow, I didn't see Saint Seiya mentioned on this thread until the very last post.
Well, granted it is an 80s Anime (86-89), but doubt anyone outside Japan did watch it before The 90s, so I guess it is still very appropriate to name here, unless we are to only discuss animes broadcasted in Japan during that decade, which makes sense but due to the state of the anime 'scene' back at that time, Saint Seiya is a 90s anime for probably all the western world. Anyway, I like so many of the animes already posted in the thread, that it would be pointless to just type them all again. The 90s were a great decade for anime, just as for many other things, seing Slayers being brought back with Revolution ad the 5th season afterwards is great. I'd like to see a revival of some old series but ONLY if the plot (manga/novels) provides enough space to do so. I don't want any Dragon Ball GT-like shows ruining out the series just for the sake of milking out franchises for quick cash. |

Only one mentioned Gaogaigar, that shouldn't be happening.
Besides Gundam for revolutionising the mecha genre, the best thing Sunrise has ever created for humanity is Gaogaigar. Gaogaigar FINAL's epicness owns even Code Geass. Gaogaigar still rivals TTGL in both hotbloodedness and epicness. There are other great 90's anime, but I think I should only mention Gaogaigar for justice.

Well, my post is structured this way:
Confirm 2 best things Sunrise created: Gundam and Gaogaigar. Compare Gaogaigar with one Sunrise product for epicness other than Gundam. Compare Gaogaigar to the most recognised epic anime. If I compared Gaogaigar to King Gainer, Zanbot 3 and Reideen, it probably won't even make an impact, since almost nobody around here has heard of them. So Code Geass being so popular and also called epic, makes a good comparison.

When I was in Korea, like when I was super young, I used to watch some "anime" on TV. That is, of course, before I realized it was "anime"... I don't know if I remember half the story of the things I watched, but I remember liking them.
Sailor Moon Cardcaptor Sakura Kaitou Saint Tail Akazukin Chacha

Well, some might argue differently, but I'd be inclined to agree.
Supertype has (almost as a rule) not been as popular in newer generations of anime viewers. Not to mention its earlier series... I'd be willing to bet a good amount of today's "mecha fans" wouldn't recognise Mazinger Z and its followers. |

Old guy here, so please excuse the nostalgia/sentimentality. I got into anime in the late 1990s and have stuck with it ever since
Neon Genesis Evangelion - The anime series that got me into anime, and that was by accident. The video rental store near my university had to put up with my hounding them for subtitled VHS tapes. NGE was so interesting that even my anime-hating roommates started tuning in with me. I remember having to wait forever to get a real VHS fansub of End of Evangelion...boy was it a disappointment. Vision of Escaflowne - Beautiful, beautiful series that introduced me to Yoko Kanno, Maaya Sakamoto and Shoji Kawamori. I remember this was being heavily promoted at the time, late 1998 or so. Key the Metal Idol - It surprised me to see this series broadcasted on public television back in 1999 (iirc, it was KTEH in the SF Bay Area). Cowboy Bebop - My first series gotten on fansubs along with Gundam Wing, and the series which prompted my first Newtype magazine purchase from Kinokuniya in San Francisco Japantown. Starting watching it right after wrapping up Escaflowne. As you can see, I was spoiled early on as an anime neophyte ;-) Rurouni Kenshin - Got this on fansubs, but had to stop just before it got to the Shishio arc. Good thing my university's anime club got hold of the first OVA episode. I remembered people emerging rather stunned due to the violence. El Hazard - This was so impressionable not only because of its humor but also because the English dub was downright superb. Also, the best anime ending, EVER. Fushigi Yuugi - Yes, this was my first shoujo. I went through the 52 episodes in three days/nights after the last week of final exams. Had that d*mn ED song stuck in my head for almost three months afterwards. Card Captor Sakura - Back in 1999 or so, I noticed that alot of the members of the university anime club were absolutely head over heels with regards to CCS. They had marathon showings at insane hours during the weekends, which I thought was a bit extreme. Two years ago, I found out why. Simply one of the most heart-warming, charming series that I've ever seen. |

: D my favorite anime decade!
in order of awesome... MARTIAN SUCCESSOR NADESICO - Probably the greatest anime ever. Serial Experiments Lain - it's just perfect in every way. Revolutionary Girl Utena - The most well-directed anime ever and an all-around classic. Ocean Waves - Ghibli's most unsung classic masterpiece. Timeless. Neon Genesis Evangelion - It's fuckin' Eva. The Legend of Black Heaven - Another forgotten but awesome work. One of the best endings in anime history. Cowboy Bebop - Awesome Trigun - Double awesome Generator Gawl - Sort of like Eva light, and a fun, short, bite sized but worthy show. Princess Mononoke - Nothing I can say that hasn't been said. Gunsmith Cats - Pulp wickedness. It's hella fun Kare Kano - Ignoring the last 10 eps, it's one of the greatest shoujo romance ever. Turn a Gundam - I haven't finished it, but it's my favorite Gundam and it's crazy. Neo-Ranga - The most WTF anime I've ever watched, though I'm not done. Rurouni Kenshin - Everyone loves Kenshin! Nineteen19 - Almost 80s, and definitely styled that way. It's a directing orgasm. Ninja Scroll - The movie that introduced me to anime! Starship Girl Yamamoto Yohko - What can I say, it's the first Shinbo show! EDIT: Forgot all about Kodocha! It's a barrel of fun! |

From 90s. Well, then that would be definitely Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Shinseiki Evangelion and Card Captor Sakura. These series are really great. Especially, if you compare recent fighting animes and YYH, you will most likely say that YYH is not inferior to them. CG is not everything.

Going through this thread brought back a lot of memories, though I can't really think of anime from the 90's as "old" for obvious reasons. Most have already been listed, but I there is one of my big favorites that nobody else has mentioned thus far - Crest of the Stars.
