The season is turning out to be a traumatic viewing.. I had hoped the killing spree towards S1's end would be done. Seeing all these awesome scouts being butchered due to abnormal circumstances is gut wrenching.
The episode was executed very well in terms of the build-up to it and how the scenes progressed. The light-hearted moment between Kirista and Renier was hilarious (what us guys were thinking anyway). And dang, I wasn't expecting him to freaking piggyback a damn titan and toss it out of the tower.. balls of steel. I do not want to talk about Nanaba and co., it was a little bit too much. Now, let's get into the theory of what is going on: - The sanctuary our scouts have found themselves in is littered with contraband ... - contraband is unusual (writing of labels, type present) ... - awkward locate for storage. also, origins/purpose of sanctuary is mysterious ... - powerful weaponry in the form of cannons present - We see Titans gathering for meal time at night, not normal ... - the Titans see to be coordinated (Beast Titan signaling them ?) ... - see a pair of titans attack each other - We find Ymir being able to read a foreign script (and is hinted in previous episode by wall-worshipers that is a person of interest) - Renier appears shocked that Ymir can read the foreign script ... - expressions indicate his shock is from the implications of reading and not that she can read it ... - in other words, Renier knows more than he is letting on - Ymir transforms into a Titan towards episode end (makes me angry, she could have saved those senior scouts.. smh) From the observations, Utgard Castle is an old stay over from before the walls were built, 100+ years old at least. It may have been an outpost to repel Titans due to the very high towers and canons present. Interestingly, it seems to be recently occupied with people/items of unknown origin.. could these folks be the ones who helped the Titans appear within Wall Rose ? Now, our peculiar Titans have come from nowhere, are attacking at night, are coordinated and sometimes display odd behavior like shoving each other (and tearing an ear off!) My guess is that the Beast Titan is response for the abnormal night activity and their origin.. well, it is the villagers. They've somehow been ravaged into these new forms. It explains the sudden appears and the lack of bodies. Renier acting odd, like he is invincible, catches Ymir's odd behavior and gets weird comments from Bertolt. These boys have something going on. Ymir, my thinking is, not from anywhere close by.. like most people within the walls are all of humanity's refugees who found these walls already pre-built and relocated. I find it suspicious that Titans waited a century to attack.. what was the catalyst ? They only roamed around the outer walls but now we have attacks from sentient Titans. So.. what happened ? (not enough information right now so I'll put it off until next week). As for Ymir, like I implied, she is likely from a very far off unknown region and came into the Walled Territories only recently. In other words, her people may of been naturally able to transform into Titans but can keep their sanity. The other titans we see are possibly failed experiments of Humanity trying to mimic the abilities of these people.. and it back fired royally. Last edited by QS_Bilal; 2017-04-22 at 15:45. |

I'm a bit put off by the pacing, this season seems to be proceeding too slowly for a single cour. At this rate we'll only have time to whet our appetite before it's over . Other than that, good episode (won't comment on the final revelation since I'm a manga reader so I wasn't *too* shocked - but admittedly I didn't remember it. I read it quite a lot of time ago).

Man, Nanaba must have had a horrible, abusive childhood D0=. I would have never guessed that considering her usual mental fortitude.
I understand the need for build-up, but it feels like things are going so SLOOOOOOWW =01. I hope it won't take another 3 or 4 episodes before they get off of this castle arc...

It was hard watching these Scouts die. You get to know them well, then killed the very next scene! That was rough watching.
This Anime really does a good job of getting you emotionally invested in one off characters.

That foreign language they found in the castle really seems to imply there are other city/country walls besides the one we are now. That or it's just old relics from the past. The transformation of Ymir looked so badass. Nice animation there!

On some side note, Ymir made a reference that Reiner liked guys(and conversely Reiner saying Ymir likes women). Then that whole Christa scene happened. So which is he(obv not asking to be spoiled =01)?

Ymir isn't exactly the most friendly character among the 104th training corp trainees.
For instance, she simply mocked Conny when the latter tried to figure out what happened to Armin during the battle of trost, as Armin was basically under psychological shock after the death of everyone in his squad, Eren included. She went as far as stating losing Eren and the rest of his squad over "good for nothing Armin" was a waste, angering Conny big time in the process. Simply put, Ymir's never shown interest in anyone except in Krista.

The Trost garrison that assisted Eren taking back Trost, the old Levi squad, the Survey Corps seniors.
if there's one thing that the series has done very well, it's introducing these people, giving them some characterisation, and then killing them off as brutally as possible, making you feel the dreadfulness and horribleness of it all. And without Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Levi etc, yep, Krysta is main chara. What a cutie (well the only one anyway. ) Last edited by Peanutbutter; 2017-04-22 at 22:27. |

If it isn't for that pep talk, Armin might not get back on his feet and retreat to the rear on his own. They can't really leave him there or have Conny dragging him all the way to the rear, can they ?
She mocking Conny in this episode, while she may have other ulterior motive, putting Conny away from dreadful thought could be seen as one of the reason too, as Reiner have stated it. She is also shown to advise Sasha to be herself, abeit mockingly. While she is not exactly a friendly type, she does show interest in other people. (not to extend of her own and Krista, of course) I think the pacing is prefect considering what the studio trying to achieve. They are likely intending to adapt only this one arc in this season. There is still plenty of time to finish it. Let's us give our side characters more time and development.

Poor guy only just wanted a drink so he could at least be trashed be he went. On the other hand he did get knocked out pretty hard be he got eaten, so perhaps there was some small mercy after all. Better that than be torn apart while you're conscious like Nanaba.
I really do like how the side characters this season are getting a lot more focus compare to first one. Yumir and Berth in particular I think had more dialogue in these last 2 episodes than they had in 26. Also kudos to the author for having gay characters, but not making it their sole defining trait to beat the audience over the head with. It's refreshingly mature compared to the norm in the medium. |

I disagree with you all.

My interpretation is that Ymir has no interest in boys because she's gay. Reiner has no interest in girls because he's so serious. Not the type to proposition a girl while they're hiding out in the ruins of a castle, anyway. |
