This thread is meant to discuss about Tomoyo After ~It's a Wonderful life~. You can use this thread to discuss about both game and manga adaptation of this spin-off.

Before anything though, please remember this game/manga is a spin-off sequel, following the end of Tomoyo's route in the original CLANNAD game (it doesn't reflect the original time line and events of CLANNAD, so spin-off).
Hence, please understand it might spoil you concerning Tomoyo's route. That said, for further overal information, please check the wikipedia article.

As a final note, please do not discuss about Tomoyo in her "CLANNAD period". For this, please rather use the concerned episode thread, the game discussion thread, and/or her character discussion thread.

Oh, so you mean the story for Tomoyo After is so sad you'll rip your heart out if an anime comes out for it. Heh....for a while there I thought you meant that you'll rip your heart out because it won't do justice to the game in your opinion, or something.

But if that's the case, IMO by all means bring on a KyoAni Tomoyo After! I personally don't mind being made to bawl all over again....

PC end...it's really sad, looking from Tomoyo's view waiting for three year, and watching your love forget you over and over again
From Tomoya's view...how to repay what Tomoyo did...
I really would prefer a happy fairy tale end.. and that their time together again isn't so short
But the scene of them watching the sunset, is the finish line, the end...but we can't see the front, so maybe...definitely a long time has passed.

Now then the PS2 version came out...and the ending added a 1 minute of dialoge after the staff credit scene, the front is pretty much the same

Tomoya: Sorry for let you wait, Tomoyo
Tomoyo: Are you letting me wait again?
Tomoyo: Every time, Everytime, I'm the one waiting for you
Tomoyo: From our first seperation of eight month...to the 3 year that you are sick...then you fell asleep(Coma)...how long would you let me wait until you are satafisied.
Tomoyo: I already...and..
Tomoya: Sorry, but I promise, I will not let go of your hand, this time it's your turn to be happy, I will let you be happy.
Tomoyo: Come, let's go, toward that Wonderful Life.

The PS2 end also has different interpertation..mainly two

1. The added scene is the world of the dead...because I want a happy end...so NO COMMENT!!!

2. Tomoyo and Tomoya are alive
PC version, Tomoya died due to the effect of the surgery, but in PS2, he fell into a coma, and after time passed, he woke up.

My thought...Fan disk like this need a Happy End.
A fairy tale ending...they lived happily ever after.

And the PC version H-event, PS2 got changed to Tomoya making Tomoyo putting on Neko-mimi, Teacher outfit, Maid and school swimsuit...

Also Tomoyo After is the event in the Tomoyo path.

Tomoya gets injured, goes into a coma for 3 years, but recovers in the end with Tomoyo's help.

When exactly was it said in the PC version that he died from surgery? Plus, I'm a bit puzzled since most of the scenes in the credits shows a recovering Tomoya as well...

Regarding the 'true story' of Tomoyo after:

Spoiler for Tomoya's accident, and the aftermath:

Basically, if the player completed Tomo's scenario perfectly, Tomoya will have had an accident in the trash heap.

After a change scene, the player (Tomoya) will find himself in an unknown room, and it'll turn out that he's gotten amnesia.

Eventually, we find out that the accident has caused Tomoya to lose his memories all the way back to the end of elementary school. (i.e. he has no recollection of Tomoyo)

Despite Tomoyo's efforts to jog his memories, Tomoya will relapse / reset every once in a while. (Can't remember if it was around 10 days... but basically whenever he starts to get a headache...)

Spoiler for Clarification of TA: True story:

In both PC and PS version, Tomoya goes into the memory relapse.

For 3 years, Tomoyo has stayed by Tomoya's side, jogging his memories time after time, even though she was never able to truly bring back his memories.
(I can't imagine how painful it was for Tomoyo, having Tomoya forget her over 100 times... and still continuing to help recover his memories)

So in both PC and PS version, there's the 3 year time leap.

Only once did she get him to the point of saying "I love you" to Tomoyo, which is what made her decide to go for the operation. Oh, and the marriage scene before the operation.

Spoiler for The ending, and differences between PS and PC:

Apparently the operation was not 100% successful, it was successful in bringing back Tomoya's memories, but as a side effect it basically killed Tomoya.

The PC version has Tomoya 'falling asleep' after they discover the wonderful life, and Tomoyo is able to live on with the memory of ever lasting love. The song life is like a melody reflects Tomoyo's ending.

I read somewhere that the PC ending was Maeda's attempt in trying to portray a situation where things don't work out even after all that someone gone through, but the ending is beautiful anyways. Sort of like a bittersweet ending...

(i.e. Tomoyo & Tomoya's efforts did not result in a 'perfect ending', but it's not that their life was not meaningful... something like that)

Unfortunately, the fans reception was less than favorable, especially with Key's history of a miracle... so the epilogue was added in the PS2 version:

So instead of dying, Tomoya falls into another coma, and supposedly wakes up, reuniting with Tomoyo.

(Of course, it can also be taken as a scene where Tomoyo has finished living her life, and has reunited with Tomoya in the afterlife..)

Personally I prefer the original ending, as the altered ending sort of cheapens the whole aftermath of the surgery... but good endings are always nice.


IMO, "Tomoyo After" really fleshed out Tomoyo and Tomoya's character, giving much more character depth to the two, as well as a resolution to their relationship. In Clannad, nothing really happened in their line in terms of character development. TA's definately the reason that I like Tomoyo so much.

Methinks they should have gone the whole hog for the PS2 ending actually (either change it completely, or stick to the original, more moving ending), but I suppose I shall settle for it. GAAAAHHH~~~!!!! Reading this thread spoilt my entire day. T_T

One of the reasons I really like Tomoyo's story was because of her perseverance. I don't think I've ever played a game before this where I truly felt that the heroine's feelings towards the main character were real. Truly one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen. (Next to the farewell scene in Little Busters. XD) Which makes Key's slap in the face to Tomoyo even more jarring and annoying. It's definitely a beautiful but bittersweet ending.

Well that certainly explains a lot of details I missed - especially since the the last part of it was very text-heavy (I relied on spoken Japanese and AGTH when I played Tomoyo After).

I remembered that in the PC version that Tomoya, from my interpretation, that he fell and hit his head while salvaging for usable materials to rebuild/refurbish the school but I didn't know how serious it was and didn't give it a second thought. It cut from the scene when Tomoyo (in the bear costume) talking to Tomo to when Tomoya woke up in the hospital with amnesia.

Still, regardless...

Tomoyo's game was by far the most touching I've played in a while -- she went though a lot over the span of three years. The most emotional part was when Tomoya wakes up again in the hospital and Tomoyo, after asking if he remembered her, said that she was Tomoyo Okazaki and (after cutting to the CG of their hands wearing wedding bands) that they were family.

I assumed like the others have that after his operation, he made a recovery of sorts because the ending credits shows a few CG still of Tomoya going through Physical Therapy with Tomoyo at his side and everything turned out for the better. But now knowing the full story it really makes the ending really profound.

There's one thing that I wondered about though....

The fact that Tomoya was going to die soon made the remaining time more signifficant to Tomoya and Tomoyo:
-- After 3 years of waiting, Tomoyo only gets to spend a short while with Tomoya before parting eternally. Yet, it is OK because they had discovered what is their treasure in life.

Such a touching scene, sad as it may be.

I felt the PS2's miracle sort of cheapened the 'enlightment' that Tomoyo attained...

Yup, it wasn't until Tomoyo spilled out the truth that we realized that 3 years had passed, and that this is the n-th time that Tomoya's woken up in the unfamilar room. Then the 'oh $@#' realization comes in, where we find out what Tomoyo's been living through. (Definately worse than if Tomoya just died...)

To make things worse, the final fate of their 3 year journey... I swear Tomoyo became a saint at the end, and uncovered all the truths to life.

The last CG with Tomoyo and Tomoya on the wheelchair should be the scene where 'the sun sets'. Considering how Tomoya is still wearing the cap covering his head after the surgery, it should not have been a long time since the surgery 'failed'...

Meh, I'm still pissed over finding out about what really happened... but I was thinking a bit about something. I had a thought that if by some stroke of fortune/misfortune, and Kyo-Ani does do a Tomoyo After OVA or something... which ending would they choose to flesh out? Or better yet...

...might they give us the long awaited happy end in full animation? And even if they don't, I suppose it'll be better to once and for all sort out if Tomoya does die in the end or if he'll wake up/survive the op in the end. Hell, I'd like some closure and a nice ending for Tomoyo.

Anyway, my thoughts on the whole issue? I wonder if this isn't Key's not so subtle way of telling the fans not to bug them for sequels. (Yes, I did read that thing that was mentioned about the writer Maeda. Tis just a joke.)

We should all start getting worried if Key announces a Kyou/Kotomo/Fuuko After.
