Still no news about Volume 12, huh? Let me know if there is. I hope Tanigawa won't let us wait for 4 years again.

The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya will be released on September 1, 2013. Both versions have increased in price 2USD, so perhaps they will include both volumes in 1 novel.

The page count says 270 but I doubt that's long enough to contain both novels...so I guess if they do include both volumes in one novel, they'll change that number somewhere down the line Either way, it's exciting news that we'll be seeing volume 10, and hopefully 11 too, in less than a year from now ^__^ Thanks for sharing this great news~ Can't wait to see what the paperback cover art will look like (and if they do put the two volumes in one, whether they'll choose to use volume 10 or 11's picture for the hardcover).

2 news items from the Sneaker's 25th anniversary event:

1. The Haruhi Suzumiya franchise is going to have a collaboration fair with Famitsu Bunko's giant hit Baka and Test tiltled Idiots, Haruhi, and a Collaboration. The only mention is that Itou will draw the Idiots.

2. The short story included in the new Itou artbook will be about Haruhi wearing a kimono. (details possible to change)

On Saturday while having a nice Korean dinner out in the Asian community of Flushing NY, a bevy of mostly Asian students from Queens College at the table next were chatting away about anime and I asked up whether they were familiar with Haruahi. After the laughs settled I got the notion from them that one popular speculation of the series conclusion is that it closes with a Madoka Magika-like ending with Haruahi and Sasaki realizing that they're each actually the amnesic split personality of God caused by a half-successful attempt by the "Dark One" (their words) to kill off God during Armageddon, so with Kyon as the secret clueless catalyst (a back-up insurance role he was always meant to be) the two girls fuse back into God and finish Armageddon. The hyper-entities in the series were designed to cover-up the truth of the two girls from the Dark One by making them appear as just mortal objects of intense self-serving research instead of vulnerable body-guarded halves of God. They get deeper about the details but that's the fascinating gist. One top wish list alternate epilogue is that if God wins the battle he/she/it returns to Kyon in a merged form of the two girls and offers to be human to live with him for a while as reward for giving her the experience of simple friendship (they mentioned the ending of a manga called "The Amazing 3" as an example of that). It was a fascinating chat and wish I could've recorded it somehow though a friend promised to find if this group has on-line hang-out as well I might hook into. If I get it I'll share it with you all. I'd like them to at least get these ideas down as a manga.

new chapter just came out for disappearance.

i must say, i am slowly missing the sci-fi elements that made this series great, or that the novelty of a yuki with feelings is just slowly wearing off me.

JP manga v18 will be released March 21. It'll adapt from the first beta part of novel 10 until the final trial for the potential new SOS Brigade members.

The manga has diverged in a few places, but not in this volume. I was just listing what portions of novel 10 it covers.

The manga doesn't actually change a lot of the big story points, but it does add in a few extra chapters here and there as standalone episodes.

Amazon has listed The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya for a November 19 release. This novel will contain both JP volumes.

Backcover text:
Quote:
The Haruhi Suzumiya Series comes to a close with this tenth and final adventure for Haruhi and the S.O.S. Brigade.

The two storylines from The Disassociation of Haruhi Suzumiya continue, introducing a new inductee into the S.O.S. brigade who may be more than just the eager freshman she appears to be. As the two realities converge, the SOS Brigade learns that the new member may have the ability to bring the two story "timelines" together-and save the world in the process.

This book was originally published as two separate volumes in Japan, but the U.S. version will feature both volumes for the price of one.
Pre-empting questions:
I've reviewed my copy of The Observation of Haruhi Suzumiya (novel fanbook) and there's a curious bit during the roundtable discussion:
Quote:

Quote:
Editor 1: This is a fanbook we've arrived at after much trouble. Wouldn't it be alright for all 5 SOS Brigade members to appear on the cover...

Tanigawa: Won't people say "Those guys again?"

Moderator: (laughs) How about the poster be (novel 9/10/11 characters) drawn by Ito? Why not use the SOS Brigade image in the next volume?

Editor 2: How would that represent the novel...

Tanigawa: I've not sent the plot to the editors yet, but I've begun writing. I'm writing, but I may throw parts out mid-way...Alright, how about I tell you verbally now?
Tanigawa then talked about the plot to the editors and Ito during the roundtable. Of course it was not printed.

I feel like Yen Press simply made an error about this being the final volume since it's currently the last volume available in Japan, but they don't know the "insider info" from that fanbook that Tanigawa is (supposedly) working on the next volume. That's what I'm hoping for anyway.

I admit that this is a shameless plug. But I write extended synopses on the novel series on my blog if it helps for whatever reason.

Adapted into the anime-
01) The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (April-May 2003)
02) The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya (Early June)
03) Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody (July 7th)
04) Mysterique Sign (July)
05) Remote Island Syndrome (Late July)
06) Endless Eight (August 17-31)
07) The Sigh of Haruhi Suzumiya (Mid-November)
08) The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina Episode 00 (Mid-November)
09) Live Alive (Late November)
10) The Day Of Sagittarius (Late November)
11) Someday In The Rain (Early or Mid December)
12) The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (December 16th to 24th)

Not adapted into the anime-
13) Love at First Sight (26th December)
14) Snowy Mountain Syndrome (30th December)
15) Where Did The Cat Go? (31st December)
16) The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya- Prologue (part 1) (January 2nd 2004)
17) Random Numbers (3rd January)
18) The Melancholy of Mikuru Asahina (mid-late January)
19) The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya- Prologue (part 2) (Tuesday 3rd February)
20) The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya (early February)
21) Editor in Chief, Full Speed Ahead! (late February)
22) Wandering Shadow (early March)
23) The Dissociation of Haruhi Suzumiya (April)
24) The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya (April)
25) The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya- Epilogue (May)
26) Rainy Day (September 2002)

I have also given the Spice and Wolf novels the same treatment.
