The funny thing about Saber and Lancer have something in common is that both of them have Masters that like to stab somebody from the back (that goes double to Kuritsugu). Haven't both of the Servants realized that this is war? Anything goes right? Well, unfortunately, there's something call playing fair which most of the Masters doesn't seem to share in common. Anyway, Kuritsugu is badass with just guns and a couple of magic tricks. To be able to beat somebody who blabbers about blood and magus and status quo, he did really good. Both Kirie and Kuritsugu like to think tactical and not just go all out front that's why they're good at what they do. What else to mention? Iris gets stabbed, Maiya got beaten to pulp, Caster ended being even more insanely crazy, and Kayneth lost a lot of blood and still alive. Yeah, that's about it.

On a random note, is Kuritsugu using a customize weapon? Because that machine gun seems to have more bullets than it should have. Hm, extra magazine or fast reloading skills?

Whoa, whoa WTF. Kotomine was really crazy this episode, with his flurry of knives and claws tearing shit up. I didn't realize he was so skilled. I also enjoyed Irisviel's determination; was almost like OMGWTFBBQ did she just get owned? Fortunately plot armor saves the day! Just kidding. It seemed this was pretty well conceived of, and lets Saber come back to heal her. Yuri vibes getting strong. She has her scabbard.

Caster fight was a bit anticlimatic, but Lancer and Saber should be able to overwhelm him. It's good that Caster has escape plans.

It was a bit too rash of Lancer's master to go charging in himself. He really did underestimate Emiya; and got a bullet full of anti-magic ownage. Fortunately, Lancer has a great sense of honor, though his master might disagree with this...

For the most part I was greatly satisfied with this episode with. The soundtrack is finally showing off some good stuff, and for once the exposition is concise. I liked Kotomine thinking he's the same as Emiya; cold heartless bastards. Well, that remains to be seen! Gonna settle for a 10 for this episode; just a lot of stuff happened in epic fashion.

He uses a Calico M960 with a helical magazine which can contain up to 100 rounds.

Much like episode 5, this one managed to provide a very satisfying conclusion to a major conflict built up and developed throughout three episodes. Seems like the show is really well planned and structured, at least from the viewpoint of someone who hasn't read the novels. I guess those who have might find them to be burning through them at too quick or slow a pace at times.

Being a total Kotomine mark, I ate up every single second of screen time he had in this episode. His brutal and pragmatic fighting style is a sight for sore eyes, especially when up against two female opponents in an episode shared with such chivalrous characters as Saber and Lancer. His impalement of Irisviel was particularly awesome and I think I might have let out a "holy crap" there. Still, as good as the action was, Kotomine's perplexed reactions to Irisviel and Maiya's resolve to protect Kiritsugu were still the most interesting bits and go a long way to show just how colossal an existence Kiritsugu has become in Kotomine's mind. The latter must be thirsting even more to hear the former's "answer" now, but one has to wonder if he'll like what he hears and what impact it will have on his being.

On a relatively unrelated note, I wonder if Tokiomi will actually realise his student's going on these risky and self-absorbed escapades this time. He should suspect not being provided a real time report as usual for such a major battle in the Einzbern grounds.

Speaking of Einzbern, this Caster arc, so to speak, has made me warm up quite a bit to Irisviel, who had up until now been the character whom I was probably least interested in. She didn't really seem to have anything going for her besides being a flawlessly loving wife, but I liked the spunk and emotional fortitude she showed in these episodes in order to support Kiritsugu in every way she can, even going as far as cooperating and bonding with his "mistress" through their shared motivation and conviction.

Anyway, no less brutal was the rest of the fight between Kiritsugu and Kayneth, and I actually felt kind of sorry for the latter in this episode. Not just due to the agonising suffering and humiliation he went through, but because you can really tell how Kiritsugu's truly sucking all the prestige and glory out of the fabled Holy Grail War in his eyes. To him, it's gotta be something akin to running across a button masher in a fighting videogame you've worked so hard to excel at it. It eats away at him and now he's scarred for life both physically and mentally, and Sola-Ui's general attitude towards him probably won't help matters. As jeroz said, I can only guess the Lancer team is in for one terrible downward spiral. Gotta wonder if they'll even live to see the "second season" at this rate. Either way, it should be quite entertaining to watch them struggle to do so.

I also gotta agree with hoarfrost in that this episode captured the bone-chilling atmosphere the Holy Grail War should aspire to possess oh so well, thanks to a fantastic use of lighting, music, camera work and all of the other components that make this into such an immersive anime. Keep up the stellar work, ufotable.

Last but not least, I'd like to say that even though I can somewhat understand the sentiment of those who seem to be mildly disappointed that yet another major conflict concluded in a relatively neat manner with no actual deaths (well, besides that of Kayneth's emotional stability), Urobuchi Gen did a fine job of executing it in a manner that doesn't feel forced and can be understandable given the nature of certain characters. And ultimately I think it's a good thing that we are yet to have a permanent loss of one of the participants (besides that one unfortunate Assassin), since the longer they stick around, the more fleshed out, and consequently the more interesting, they will be, and the more we'll feel for them when they truly bite the dust for good. And you have remember that unlike Fate/Stay Night which had three routes to tell three different versions of its war, Fate/Zero can only tell one, so if one of the teams went out this early they probably would not have had a satisfying enough amount of exposure and development.

Even though the woman's identity being Touko has already been disproved, I would like to clarify nonetheless that they also had different voices. Touko's voice actress was Takako Honda and the woman in this episode was voiced by Akeno Watanabe.

Don't think Kayneth is a backstabbing type of person, which is why he enters the fortress through the front gate, announces his intention, and expressed his hatred when Kiritsugu uses cheap methods like guns and traps.
He went into this war thinking it will be full of honorable duels between mages putting their lifetime training on the line. Just imagine what it would be like if he faces up against Tohsaka. Granted that I think Lancer will get obliterated by Archer, but the fight between water and fire elements would be nice to see. Pity that Kiritsugu is not your typical Mage.

I don't think anyone except the saber faction knows about Kiritsugu's Origin Bullet. I doubt even Saber realised that her master is such a *****

Kiritsugu should feel proud at how well his wife and mistress get along.

wow, amazing episode. the development for Kotomine was amazing. he's devoted his entire existence to fighting someone exactly like him. cold, calculated, and uncaring. but he doesn't know that emiya changed, and i can't wait to see how he reacts when he realizes that.

Another nice episode with pretty much non-stop action. Irisviel vs Kotomine was really good even though she obviously was no match for his overwhelming might. And then the plot arm- err Avalon kicked in to save the day

Really tense episode. That Origin bullet is pretty nasty. An anti-mage bullet rendering maguses powerless. Kotomine is such a beast anyway. He does live up to his title as Executor.

Great fight scenes in this episode, I was blown away. I especially liked the fight between Archibald and Emiya, actually it was a bit of a buzzkill when Lancer showed up to be honest. I wonder if there will be any conflict between Saber and Kiritsugu regarding her decision to let him save Archibald. I have to say though, I wanted someone to die this episode just to get the ball rolling a bit. I like the Ilyasviel girl but I was willing to accept her as the death and was surprised when she survived. Even Caster got away. Hopefully something comes in this next episode of major significance.

Another great episode! If Kayneth wasn't screwed from being shot with Kiritsugu's bullet, i'm pretty sure he was when he fell into a puddle of mercury. (Mercury is dangerous right? Maybe it's a non-lethal in-universe variant.)

What I liked the most about this episode was just how action-packed, and packed in a more general sense, it was.

It truly did feel like ufotable managed to squeeze every ounce of valuable content that they possibly could out of this episode, as not a minute was wasted or came across as superfluous.

So that I found particularly rewarding.

I also appreciated how this episode did a good job of alternating from one conflict to the second to the third and then back again to the first conflict. Having three good-to-great battles in the broader war going on at the same time, and covering them all well, certainly did contribute to that "packed" feeling that I mentioned before.

The BGM also added a great deal to the overall gripping and tense atmosphere at play here.

However, I'm personally not fond of the fact that no major character (other than an Assassin) has yet to die in this. We have seven Master/Servant pairs in this narrative, as well as various supporters of one or another pair (Irisviel, Maiya, Sola-Ui, etc...). We have 25 episodes to work with in total, and we're now through episode 8, which means we're through roughly a third of the episodes.

Ultimately there is only so much character development time you can devote to each of these pairs and their respective supporters.

I think it's high-time for somebody of importance to actually die in this, and it's starting to feel ever so slightly contrived to me that nobody has. I honestly went into this episode thinking somebody would die (either Kayneth or Caster or both).

Now, at this juncture, this is a very mild criticism, but it is a criticism that will grow for me in future weeks if we don't soon and finally see a Master and/or Servant and/or a supporter get taken down.

But overall, a very enjoyable Episode eight for me. 9/10.

Well judging from the preview, Kayneth is already K.O'd indeed.

My gut tells me that a few people might be biting the dust in the next 2 episodes depending on how things play out. I definitely think masters/servents in both the Caster and lancer groups are going to be on the chopping block soon as those seem to be the central conflicts at the moment.

Saber is going to have to be healed sooner rather than later, thus its quite possible Lancer or his master will be defeated in the next few coming episodes and of course many parties are after Caster and his master so they're in just as much danger I believe.

Good points, and I think you're right.

So I'm still pretty optimistic overall here.

Logically speaking, I don't see how Caster and his master can hold out much longer given that just about everybody should soon be gunning for them.
