I'm guessing you didn't follow the friendly link I posted.

It's from Planetes.
Quote:
Planetes (プラネテス, Greek: ΠΛΑΝΗΤΕΣ, meaning "Wanderer") is a Japanese science-fiction manga by Makoto Yukimura. It was adapted as a 26-episode television anime by Sunrise, which was broadcast on NHK from October 2003 through April 2004.

The manga is published in English in North America by Tokyopop, and the anime is distributed in North America by Bandai Entertainment. Both the manga and anime received the Seiun Award for best science fiction series.

The story of Planetes is set in the year 2075, and follows the crew of DS-12, Toy Box, of the Space Debris Section, a unit of Technora Corporation. It's their job to prevent the damage or destruction of satellites, space stations and spacecraft from collision with debris in Earth's and the Moon's orbits. They use a number of methods to dispose of the debris (mainly by burning it via atmospheric re-entry or through salvage), accomplished through the use of EVA suits.

The Japanese space agency Jaxa served as a technical consultant to the series. The American version of the DVDs featured interviews with two scientists from Nasa's Orbital Debris Section... One of the scientists stated that the previous director of the Nasa Orbital Debris Section was in fact Mr Donald Kessler, the scientist who proposed the eponymous Kessler Syndrome*, which is cited and used several times in both the anime and manga.
*The Kessler Syndrome is a worst-case scenario, proposed by Nasa consultant Donald Kessler, in which the volume of space debris in low Earth orbit is so high that objects in orbit are frequently struck by debris, creating even more debris and a greater risk of further impacts. The implication of this scenario is that the escalating amount of debris in orbit could eventually render space exploration, and even the use of satellites, unfeasible for many generations.

I don't know where this fit -- here or at the Silly News thread -- but looks like that other H-games in Amazon are in the possibility of being red-flagged after this news came up:

Amazon yanks rape simulation game

Quote:
Online retail giant Amazon has yanked from its virtual shelves a Japanese computer game that lets players simulate raping girls.

A "Rapelay" (sic) videogame being hawked on Amazon by a third-party merchant was deemed inappropriate and the product's page taken down after it was brought to the California internet firm's attention on Wednesday night.

"We determined that we did not want to be selling this particular item," Amazon spokeswoman Patty Smith said of the computer game.

The "Rapelay" game was created exclusively for the Japanese market but a couple of "like new" copies were being offered on Amazon by a US seller specializing in animated Japanese pornography.

well... ya gotta wonder about the brilliance of the game title. But otoh.. is Amazon going to take down all their books that involve horrible crimes, serial murder, torture, rape, mutilation? Why was a piece of software different? Don't get me started on the toxic crap movies they happily sell

I wonder if they have any idea what amazon.co.jp sells...

I would imagine that when more senses (vision, hearing, taste, etc) are involved at intaking information, the impact or after-affect of such information is more complete for most people.

Agreed, but to be honest that's one reason I don't watch slasher movies or movies that involve sex torture, rape, etc. Cape Fear bothered the hell out of me for months. Hell, some of the crap on tv crime shows I find toxic. But there's the difference -- Amazon still happily sells those... I don't see them taking those down.

A rational excuse for taking it down might have been that it was unrated software and Amazon doesn't do unrated software or movies either? Just getting the feeling that it being software, they were reacting inconsistently.

Ooops! When you bolded books I thought you were making a comparison. I see what you are saying now. I think it has more to do with the title which you've already made similar observation to. Lol at Rape Play. They say, "sex sells."

I guess those looking for rape games on Amazon.com will just have to settle for Hitomi: My Stepsister (Yes, it's a rape game. Goes well beyond vanilla rape if the reviews are to be believed too.) and Tsuki: Possession.

It'S possible than the problem with the game ir than they are interactive. With all those books and movie than they sells happily, the customers are passive insted. That might be doing a difference.

^Manhunt, and other similar video games, can be found on Amazon, and those games have the player-character actively murdering people for very little reason (i.e. there is a negligible difference between an interactive rape game and a (mostly) interactive death game (I say mostly because games like Manhunt at least create the facsimile of a story that allows the constant murder to be viewed as slightly acceptable (within the confines of the game it is acceptable) whereas rape games never have a reason for allowing the rape to occur (not that any reason would ever be acceptable))).

That being said, due to the sheer non-reality of the games (the games have literally no basis in reality), I see no reason why Amazon cannot sell them.

Plane crash in New York state kills 49
Quote:
Buffalo, New York (Feb 13): Forty-nine people were killed when a passenger plane crashed into a house near Buffalo, New York, and burst into a ball of flames late on Thursday, officials said.

The plane, a Continental Connection flight operated by Colgan Air, was on a flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Buffalo with 44 passengers and four crew on board when it crashed in the Buffalo suburb of Clarence Center amid rain and sleet, officials said.

Ms Becky Gibbons of New York State Police, speaking to CNN, said all 48 people on the plane were killed. The New York Times, citing an official of Erie County, Mr Chris Collins, said one person on the ground was killed.

The plane crashed short of the airport in a residential area near the edge of farmland, lighting up the night sky with a huge orange fireball, witnesses said. At least one home was destroyed and others were damaged. A battery of fire engines and ambulances convened on the scene, where the tail section stuck out of a crater.

There was no word yet on the cause of the crash.

The crash came less than a month after the successful crash landing of a US Airways jetliner on the Hudson River in New York City. All 155 people on board survived after the plane struck birds that were sucked into both engines and pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger brought the plane down on the river. Passengers and crew were rescued by ferry boats.

It seems that the fire hasn't been put out yet. I wonder what will happen to the family whose house had been destroyed by a plane.

man, I grew up 2 miles from where the crash happened, my parents said that they could see the glow from the fire from their house. The fire is still going and it is not expected to be put out till mid afternoon.

Is it not the ''Silly/Odd News Stories from around the World '' tread for that ( and more appropriate for this kind of ''story'')?

Well, first of all.... flims and books with gratuitous rape and violence is watched and enjoyed by the viewers as an audience. Games like Raplay is a little diffrent than those. It's not the explicity of the content in itself, but the fact that you take initiative to control your character to simulate raping someone. There is a diffrence between passive and active experience, so it's understandable for retailers to separate the two.

You know, I don't know enough about the game to know about the gameplay mechanics... but I have trouble imagining any sort of rape "simulation" where the interactivity is going to cause any noticeable difference in effect on the consumer.

I think you're misunderstanding my point.

I'm not talking about effects on the player as opposed to viewer....
I'm simply saying that there's a diffrence between a passive medium and an active one, and can't really be lumped together.
Video game != books and films

Whether there's a diffrence in perception of the viewer/player is totally another issue, and I didn't even attempt to touch that one.
Subject here is merchants distinguishing the forms of mediums, and deciding what to and not to carry. Not a scientific study on effects of these mediums.
