I've heard abortion IS the preferred birth control in Japan they just don't talk about it According to this site: http://factsanddetails.com/japan.php?itemid=599 On the social stigmas attached to birth control pills, one Japanese psychiatrist told Newsweek, "Many women still say, my boyfriend would think I play around if I talked about birth control." One Japanese gynecologist said, "It's easier for a Japanese woman to say she's had an abortion that to say she's on the pill."

plus I also heard somewhere that only recently Japan allows woman to take the pill? Maybe not Japan, but somewhere else. But like what you have suggested, sometimes birth control also relates to the culture and the equality of gender in each particular country.
But I don't think shonen manga will ever allow abortion on somewhat important characters @ReaperxKingx yeah, birth rate in japan is low, but i think teenage pregnancy is a totally different issue.

Well, when I created that post, I had no intention to look at the actual study of teenage pregnancy in Japan...I only joked that teenage pregnancy must be a serious issue if Seo has to do it twice.
So I apologize if anyone got an impression from my post that teenage pregnancy is a serious issue in Japan

In actual fact, we Americans should follow Japan's example because base on the stats, sexual education needs to be put back into school systems immediately. |

Japan's low birth rate issues are kind of exaggerated because people don't bother remembering that there are multiple factors affecting population aside from birthing. In reality Japan's birth rates aren't all too different from other developed countries with high education (America is an exception since education is inconsistent in many areas). Birth rates are always relatively low compared to third world countries because of education on sex and birth control, but the main difference is that Japan also has a low immigration rate, meaning there aren't many people coming in to boost the numbers unlike how it is for America or the European countries. |
