The "pancake faces" work better for me in the actual anime than in scans. For some reason, the scans just don't look right. Maybe it's the lack of motion?

Watching the opening again, i think Madoka is crying because she constantly screws up when using her power (and thus won't have enough power to avert The End Of The World As We Know It)... until her other self tribadism reassures her to just be herself and pursue Homura (who have been telling her how she sucks as a Puella Magi).

This. I remember that someone in 2ch was trying to spoil Angel Beats saying like it was a leak info. And it was totally wrong. I guess this happens in every original series.

Interesting first episode. I couldn't hope but wonder how much better the girls would look with better designs... but... it's not like it's going to change. I do have to agree that it makes this harder to take seriously. But everything was really great. The music and visuals were great and the transformation scene was too long, lol.

Urobuchi Gen was what drew me here as well. I had heard about this show but I had no real serious intentions of watching until I found out he was involved.

I seriously dislike "pancake faces" in anything because it looks so weird, but I agree that the pencil eyes are really awesome.

is Kyubey's name somehow related to the word Kyuubi? though he/she doesn't look like one

I thought "kyuubi" too. It'd be a lot cooler if it did look like one. There are too many shows that cross cat-bunny things together for mascots....

I'm willing to see the "pancake faces" as like in higurashi where the characters are cute, but the storyline is fked up.

Not many comes into this series expecting it to be this dark when all they know are the PVs and nothing about Urobuchi Gen.

Yes, with proper faces instead of those pancake faces, the girls would look clearly better... it's bad that the otherwise nice design is marred by this
