Episode 3 was confusing and out of place. It's like they are dropping chunks of the Berserk lore here and there but it's never fully explained. They even focused on rapist horses and how the meat the Apostle eats taste like, instead of actually important things like who are these apostles and their purpose?
Plus, not only the animation sucks because it's cg, but the camera work, art and overall direction was also god damn awful. Like @bercerus said, this is amateur work at best. Berserk deserves Ufotable or Bones tier studio, not this trainwreck! Not even Toei is this bad...

Farnese looks weird there.
Watched the second episode, and more-or-less they pulled it out with the pacing from Guts getting subdued to escaping with Puck's help, although he was at about 50% percent due to his wounds from the previous fight against the dark spirits.

Still, Guts getting sort of like half-killed is not enough from stopping him at doing what he does best crushing everyone and everything that gets in his way. Of course, I'm conscious that when Guts is at his peak and finest then he goes completely rampage at 100% full capacity.

Maybe it's me overrating Guts abilities, strength, and resolve, but he's definitely a living HAXX powerhouse.

About the crappy animation, I'll just have to bear it all through beginning with the amateur work, the odd camera angles, and pacing issues. However, I'm glad that the soundtrack is good and at times epic.

Pretty laughable about the Knights inexperience under Farnesse's command and also on her own inexperience at the battlefield.

Of course, Berserks' settings some emulate or take from Medieval Europe during the Dark Ages. It can be understandable Farnesse loyalty and religious fervor to some point, but the world there is pretty much forsaken from the start; spirits and demons go and come as they please tasting human flesh unabated.
I'm saying this because Farnesse's religious discourse became a nuisance for me to hear.

Guts has only a path ahead of him and that leads to revenge against someone, and he'll simply live to be free, to kill, and to do things his way.

In a world like Berserk one must accept that he or she sooner or later is going to become broken whether or not the battlefield and war beckons you. However, the great question begs for the broken whether they chose to stand-up and walk again on the track to endure more brutality and insanity or choosing just to lie in wait for death and rotting on the ground to become fodder for the beasts and demons.

I just tried to sit through the third episode, but I didn't made it. Maybe if that edgelord mary stu Guts wouldn't get like all the attention there were interesting tales to tell. Or maybe it's just a bad adaptation.

I'd say late Middle Ages and early Renaissance, with gunpowder weapons being in its infancy as shown by Guts' artificial arm. The Golden Age arc seems to have taken bits from the Hundred Years War and the Thirty Years War. Paul Verhoeven's Flesh And Blood movie, starring Rutger Hauer, is the best movie that could give a feel of Berserk crapsackness.

Yeah, you're not gonna understand much if you haven't read the manga, or at least watched the previous anime series or movies. But yes, the really short gist of it is he seeks revenge on Griffith (and all of demonkind) for his betrayal.

And Berserk's kind of a mishmash of different periods in time, as well as a few historical figures. Miura admitted to combining various pieces of media for the creation of Berserk's world. So I'd be hesitant to try and pin down what time period it's supposed to represent. It's simply fantasy.

Definitely the best episode so far. They kept close to the manga as well, barring a few things (but really, I'd be nitpicking if I pointed them out).

Spoiler for Episode 4:

Mozgus's anime:

But yeah, I feel like the show is getting better now too with the recent developments. Casca retaining her skin color again also pleases me.

I love Sawashiro's voice. The moment you hear her talking - you know that's not someone else, but her

Watch the golden age arc, be it the 1990s séries or the movie trilogy! You are missing one of the most compelling story of rise & fall, love, friendship, ambition, loyalty and betrayal!!

Agreed , best episode so far regarding art direction and music (only bad parts for me were Erika meting Guts and Farny looking the punishment) , Guts and Godo seiyus feel a little short, Guts in the cave monologue and Godo in the talk hammering the DS.
Hope the studio keep improving so at the end we can get a series worth of the name of Berserk.

I agree, Godo's conversation with Guts was somewhat weak due to the voice acting. Godo's not nearly gruff enough and there wasn't enough emotion from Guts.

The movies are a pretty bad introduction to the golden era.

The movies are fine and it also provides some continuity with the current TV series (CGI, same VAs, TV series starts literately at the point where the movie left off)

Anyway I'm enjoying the adaptation, I wish it had HxH or OPM quality to it, but well you can't have them all I suppose.

Enjoyed this episode, keeps getting better every week imo, but I still think it's not as graphic as the manga when it comes to the violence. I can't feel that dark 'medieval' vibe that I felt when watching the older series and the manga.

Ah. This is What I wanted. I will consider that this anime of Berserk starts at episode 4. That would be the best for me.
