Seeing that particular mech in the key visual makes me worry that they'll rush through the content, though the previews at least show a lot of the mecha goodness that make me like this title.
And yes Eru, robots are a man's romance!

I'm interested to see whether Knights or Isekai Smartphone will be more popular among Japanese viewers.
Knights is more unique with the magitech mecha focus, but its appeal to a subset of mecha otaku and lack of sexy fanservice could drive mainstream otaku (and mecha hating) viewers away from it. Smartphone is arguably more generic, but it plays it safe by appealing to general otaku tastes and expectations. |

More anime character designs revealed!
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...e-cast/.117137 Designs for Eru's grandpa, mother, and Boss David skew more towards the manga design. Batson's design leans more towards his LN illustration, IIRC. I don't remember the dwarves being designed with pointy ears though. Must be anime original. Designs for Stefania, Kurata Tsubasa and Eru's father seem to be largely original. No drill-curls for Stefania, but her long wavy hair and hair bow look quite ojou-sama-ish. Kurata looks very bookish. Eru's dad looks like a German army antagonist from spy series like Joker Game, or a sub-boss encountered by Wonder Woman/Captain America. |

Everything looked good visually. Pacing is a bit fast. They changed or outright skipped some stuff, but I think it's okay. It doesn't really hurt the story so far. I just hope they don't do this to the R&D stuff. Those are some of my favorite parts of the series. Anyway, it's pretty solid overall.

I've not read any of the original sources for this so I don't really know what's different but I was reasonably okay with the pacing - despite the speed I could follow what was happening pretty easily. I can certainly tell that many things were skipped but on the other hand, it's dangerous to start a series with a "slow" episode. A common technique is to start deep in the story then using some flashback episodes but I don't really like that, so I'm glad they seem to be taking a linear approach.

I love the gritty and used looks those robots have, makes them feel so real. And isn't Ernie the cutest? Such an adorable trap! <3
Real fast first episode, death, reborn (or soul set into a boy?), demon fight, robot love, training and learning, new friends, first day at school, new friend, helping out said new friend, getting into advanced class by showing your teach how amazing you are, three years later, practice training, half-sis of friends, demon attack, escape, no escape but reinforcement because teach lets you because you are awesome, epic rescue, high school senpais beating the demons, huge demon shows up who has killed a couple knight runners and is about to melt another, end. Hoh boy, this was a huge amount of elements shown in just one episode. Feels like they wanna get to the good parts as quickly as possible. Not that they did it badly but I would have liked for them to build a bit more on how magic works and why it is "programming" like Ernie said so or how exactly a Robot works, though that is state secret so that will be probably explained later on. Still good episode, pretty enjoyable to watch, especially Ernie's enthusiasm for giant mechas.^^
