she might not be a mary-sue (or even close)
but her actual character flaws are mostly her being "naive, gullible, emotional, borderline self-righteous and easily manipulated" all of which can be accused of just about every shonen/mecha hero ever made and all minor, when mesured against some of the other things that the characters in this show have

Oh please, Mary Sue =/= not having flaws. And please, no character has no flaws in no fiction project ever made. Actually, in the most fiction works, it is the flaws that keep going the given chara everytime, and each chapter/epi, the character evolves and that is the point.
If we got to call someone MarySue in Geass, that would be Euphie or Shirley. And again, let us not put stupid labels for no reason. I think that the problem with the Kallen-hating is that Kallen, has actually a lot of flaws and yet people still like her. Compared to other charas that are nowhere in the league of flaws Kallen has, and yet they are not as popular as her. That is the point of all the hating. Except those people, forget again, the concept of evolving when it comes to fiction. Do not hate guys, appreciate. /yeah ZOMG HARD I know, I know...

You might be able to feasibly launch an accusation of 'Mary Sue-ness' at Euphemia, but as for Shirley: no way. One principal feature of Mary Sues is that they are overpowered and get all the (in-story) attention--Shirley doesn't come close in that respect.
I don't personally find Kallen a Mary Sue. I do dislike her, and am somewhat discomfitted by all the attention/praise she gets, but this is the Kallen thread so I won't get too far into that. To put it simply, I think my major issue with Kallen is the emotionality of her motivations. It's all plain revenge, love, injustice, betrayal etc. with her. These are all very black and white, emotional concepts. There's very little logic, cool thinking, or attempting to understand the other perspective in the way Kallen acts (Lelouch and Suzaku both demonstrate varying degree of these). This bothers me because, despite undergoing/bearing nowhere near most of the emotional turmoil/brunt of the series, Kallen is easily the most emotional character in Code Geass. :P Sorry if anybody is bothered by my unenthusiasm. I can't say my perspective is particularly objective, so I'm not trying to push anything on anybody. |

while she doesnt undergo the most emotional turmoil out of all the characters
she has her fair share of it enough that i would easily put her on par or above just about any character short of either lelouch or suzaku and she doesnt fall much behind them either besides some people (read: me) like action girls with an emotional side

And also, whatever makes you dislike Kallen, is exactly what makes her appealing to her fans. Her powerful chords of emotions running wild, like a Harley Davidson riding in the streets. Yep, that is my girl, born to be wild. ; D

–adjective 1. having, compelled by, or ruled by intense emotion or strong feeling; check 2. easily aroused to or influenced by sexual desire; ardently sensual. Well I wouldn't say "easily" in any context. But for the sake of conversation in one Code Geass side story, Kallen is woken from a "dream" of the naughty type about Zero. And you know some of us saw some lip quivering when Lelouch made his comfort move 3. expressing, showing, or marked by intense or strong feeling; emotional: check

I think most people that like Kallen like her because she's overly emotional, and not all that logical. I mean, lets be honest here, largely logical characters have a great tendency to be rather...boring.
