Interesting anime please?

It seems to me that with each coming season lineup, the standard for "good" or "unique" is becoming diminished. People seem content with increasingly more mediocre anime these days.

Question is, are there any anime's that are relatively new that push the genre forward? Something unique, interesting, and not cookie-cutter? Just finished steins;gate and thought it was pretty good. Not the best though.

Anyways, thanks in advance for any good recommendations.

List of anime I really enjoyed.

Great teacher Onizuka
Monster
5 CM per second
Berserk
Cross Game
Gintama
Gungrave
Hajime no ippo
Hanasaku iroha
Last Exile
Nana
Air gear
Black Lagoon
Last exile
Paprika
Welcome to the NHK
Rainbow
To name a few.

Before I can help you can you please clarify your meaning of relatively new or recent. Do you want something from 2010 to 2012 or do you want something in the now, to say the least.

All I can do for now is recommend Hyouka to you because it's one of my favourite anime right now and the protagonist is crafty and cunning. Assuming if you're watching it already, that's all I can think of right now.

That's all I can give you for now.

Edit:

Okay well here are my suggestions to you.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Katanagatari
Fate/Zero
Sora no Woto
Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners

Don't forget about Hyouka as well. What do you think?

Meh, just some random anime from recent to a few years ago... All worth a watch imho; all kind of quirky.

Seconded.
Along the same lines, Bakemonogatari and Nisemonogatari come to mind. Lots of dialogue, comedic social commentary. Nisemonogatari gets the award for best toothbrushing scene in all of anime.

I'd also suggest Hetalia. I can't guarantee you'll like it, but it's certainly unique... The Funimation dub is also one of the most localized I've seen, for better or worse depending on how you feel about that.

The World God Only Knows isn't what I'd call a "great anime" (it's a lighthearted drama/comedy) but it's got its own thing going on. The hero is a dating sims master who ends up having to apply his skills to romance girls in the real world. And he's successful.

B Gata H Kei was another recent comedy I found to be unique. It's not deep by any means, but I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would based on the premise.

Seen B Gata H Kei, thought it was funny how she wanted 1,000 f*ck buddies.

Watched The world god only knows and quite enjoyed it.

Nisemonogatari sounds like something I will check out. I need to see this toothbrushing episode.

ATM I am watching Tiger & Bunny, and I have to say it is completely amazing.

Five years lets me point to this list of favorites since 2006 or so. From the past couple of years I'd endorse earlier suggestions Madoka Magica, Level E, Tsuritama, Space Brothers, and Sakamichi no Apollon. I'll also toss out

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Saraiya Goyou
Mouryou no Hako
Aoi Bungaku
Cross Game
Kuragehime

just in case you missed them. I'm focusing on shows that might meet your criteria of "something unique, interesting, and not cookie-cutter."

(I'd add Hyouge Mono to that list, but I'm beginning to doubt the subs will ever be completed. Would that the current surge of interest in the Sengoku period might garner that show some attention. Instead we're being deluged with remakes that turn the main historical figures into cute girls.)

One other show I'll mention here is AKB0048 because its premise, teen-aged idol singers as galactic freedom fighters, is so bizarre. Pretty entertaining though, in a cheesy sort of way.
