Manga 'Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau' (Tales of the Whales Calves) is getting an anime adaptation.

Plot Summary

Quote:

Chakuro is the 14-year-old archivist of the Mud Whale, a nigh-utopian island that floats across the surface of an endless sea of sand. Nine in ten of the inhabitants of the Mud Whale have been blessed and cursed with the ability to use saimia, special powers that doom them to an early death.

Chakuro and his friends have stumbled across other islands, but they have never met, seen, or even heard of a human who wasn't from their own. One day, Chakuro visits an island as large as the Mud Whale and meets a girl who will change his destiny.

Is the title really spelled Wales Calves? Or should it be Whales Calves? I ask because the description keeps talking about whales and because the ANN article uses Whales in its show title name.

Probably Whales, I checked several other related sites of the original manga title and it should be that.

I was a bit puzzled at first myself ... but then again you never know. Just recently we had the announcement about hula dancer training named Flying Babies, after all. And that seemed deliberate. :\

In any event this is (one of the piles and piles) of manga I have not heard of, but from the description the story sounds kinda interesting. The setting certainly looks like it has potential at least.

That does look great. But I must say I find Hanae Natsuki really grating lately. His performances are very one-note.

Wow.

The animation didn't feel like it. It's like a much better version of Grimgar's.
And the color schemes. They really are upping the ante after perfecting mood and tone from Railgun S and Danmachi.

It looks interesting though. Premise and visuals seems solid and worth anticipating. We'll see how it turns out.

Absolutely jaw-dropping visuals, and that theme is lovely to listen to. I've been sad that JC staff did 4 straight series of 'cute girls SOL' shows, so I'm glad this is the combo breaker. Sure not many shows are announced for fall, but it would take a ton for an anime to unseat this as my frontrunner for that cour.
