I'm as big a fan of the novel as anybody, and I don't think it was a "failure" at all. The Oni arc was indeed seriously compressed, and it missed out on the big finish, but it was well in keeping with the spirit of the novels.

In any case, DVD sales was too awful despite the anime with so-so popular original material (probably season 2 is impossible). It proves many novel fans were disappointed at it and also they couldn't get pure anime fans.

The new member is an angry German rune user. He hates everybody on the team, especially Itsuki. He's not too powerful and very little fun to be around, basically a male tsundere. Honestly you're not missing much.

as for the novels, I was reading the Chinese ones online. If you can read Chinese, I can give you the link... but even the Chinese ones are behind by 2-3 volumes. Still, things seem to be getting more serious, and we're also getting a better direction on where the novels are heading.

something about Honami being a witch of misfortune... the organisation warning Itsuki to stay away from her if he doesn't want to get deeper involved. Honami's father is actually the (forgot his name) guy from the organisation who always hangs around Astral and observes them. And he's got this insane power that can swat down a god/dragon (sorry, hazy memory here).

The (uh, names!!) guy with an artificial body, the one who made Lapis, has had a change of heart and did all he could to make Itsuki a new eye patch, but instead got the rest of his body stolen. He seems to be seriously dying and says something about Lapis going back to Itsuki or something like that. The culprit behind this guy's sorry state is this other organisation, well, the major villain.

This anime is like Suzumiya Haruhi...the episodes aren't aired chronologically.

I tried watching it the first time and I got bored after 2 episodes, 2nd time I got bored after 6 episodes then I finished it by the 3rd time, I give this anime 5/10, the art is great but the main character is boring and uninteresting, his love interests at least were interesting.

Definitely a nice series to come back and watch during the holidays. After all has a Christmas episode and everything . While flaws were in there definitely a nice series to just relax and watch.

But wow reading back through this thread is hilarious . Things like the deep and comical discussions over relationships with ghosts . No matter what one thinks of the series the discussion was great.

Well I finished the series, it was a really good series, the out of order thing made it unconventional, I regretted having watched Haruhi in Chronological order the first time, so I made sure not to make the same mistake again. All the characters were very cool, I really liked Honami's rocket broom. I have to say Kuroha became a favorite of mine. I think I might watch it through in order now, not sure though.

Forgot to post this, ANN put up a review of the first set a while back and said that, while it was interesting and not terrible, it just wasn't that memorable. They also have an explanation (not in the review, in the forum discussion) for how the DVDs have both broadcast and chronological order, still makes me worried about trying to rent the series and watch it that way.

Having watched it as it aired and then rewatching in chronological order I can say both are fine ways to watch it. Think it's a bit better to watch in order. Agree Kuroha was easily a favourite after watching this. Just had some nice energy and was a really good ghost character. Wow reminds me of the fun discussions this thread came up with regarding her.

Rental Magica might not have been an amazing series, but it had fun discussion.

This series gotten pretty popular in japan recently. There is 17 volume now.
There is a definate antagonistic organization now, an ancient conspricy, revealation of
the REAL truth behind itsuki's eye, deals are made wars are declared, alliances are formed loyalties are tested. Yesterday 's enemy are today's friend and the opposite is true as well. And for better or worse even the best group will have to part their ways due to unforeseen cicumstances. And on top of all that after the shit really hit the fan in vol 16 the authour pull a time skip in vol 17.
The plot thickens to say the least.....

About half an year to an year but it seems that alot happened in the time skip as it seems that itsuki took a level in badass from the training from hell he underwent in china and india during the time skip.

alot happened before the timeskip. Due to a series of important events , the Association 's counsil of magi has learned the truth behind ituski's eye and declared him an abomination and order him to be captured and studied or destoryed outright. Since the counsil of magi controls all magic association it is the duty of astral and goetia to aid in itsuki's capture. However the evil antagonistic organization ophion step in to save itsuki. After all the dust have settled honami and nekoyashiki struck a deal with honami's father to spare itsuki's life- they both will resign from astral and join the counsil 's enforcers department as witch hunters. adelicia is also forced to cut her ties with astral and return to her headquarters in england (the author spend quite a bit of recent volume developing her character , she is pretty awesome in recent volumes) . So in the end itsuki had the "fruit of eden" and the dragon "astral" torn from his body and sealed away by the counsil. Ituski now only have the regular glam sight. And then happens the time skip . After losing two members astral gained 2 new member- lapuis the humuculus/basilisk and chloe redcliffe the knight templar who is the overseer sent to observe itsuki by the counsil. So astral still have kuroha, mikan and the norwegien rune fighter recruited in vol 9, anime ended around vol 5/6.

To answer your questions

yes he was hunted down because the association feared what he might ve become if some one with his powers were to go out of control. itsuki's glam sight is far from a normal glam sight because of the fruit of eden he had in his eye since he was young, and he grow more powerful everyday and the dragon only makes him more stronger. The fruit of eden is the apple from eden which is what caused adam and eve to be banished by god as it give them knowledge of good and bad. Modern Mages believe it is a source of infinite knowledge and it is what gives itsuki's glam sight the ability to see and understand everything. It took alot of very very powerful people and an interesting circumstances to strip itsuki of his power. In the end he is free to go but is placed under watch(that is why astral has a knight templar now). Honami and Nekoyashiki now works for the association and can not act without the association's permission.
Itsuki's regular glam sight is no where near as hax as before, as now he can only see but lost the ability to instantly recognize what he sees and devise a counter for it right away. Now there is a very long pause before he is able to issue his orders to his team. Thus he spend the year after his nerf to train his body and mind/knowledge to make up for his loss. He changed alot and he doesn't even wear an eye patch now as contact lens are enough to hide his down graded glam sight.
