Well, it's because of Fold Out armor, which can create ANYTHING on a whim at the cost of energy. Creating a whole tool like Houki did need some time.

OTOH, Second Shift on Gospel don't create another weapon, it create additional function. If you notice, the wing didn't change too much, merely unfolded, and now it cxan shoot big-ass beam.

Speaking of which, would it be too odd to have Second Shift triggered by the pilot's emotions alone? Emotions of great magnitudes that is.

Not an expert on that, sorry. I know you can use it for charging attacks and surprise attacks, but sniper's generally don't engage in melee unless desperate.

Not that we know the trigger for Second Shift anyway, we've only seen it twice--both times it was triggered out of necessity.

Though I guess you could also say it can be triggered by understanding or acceptance.

What I have in mind is that the IS takes time to formulate a Second Shift configuration. However, even if said configuration has been finalised, the IS requires its owner to have the confidence to bear its new power... and that would require either a strong feeling of responsibility and/or the desire to protect.

old bayonets were just pokers. Newer bayonet designs are just generally combat knives attached to rifles and SMG's that have the necessary railing or attachment. So unlike the first bayonets, the newer bayonets were designed as a hand held weapon first and gun option second.

Then again, watching AGE-3's first battle gives me an idea for a scene :3
