Outside of the title being done by the same person who did the character designs for Madoka Magica, the "heads only" version of the Hidamari Sketch girls is not a reference to episode 3 of Madoka Magica, as that was being done some time before that episode aired (with me buying a pin version of a "heads only" Yuno years ago).

Mami should have known better than to go and lose her head in a situation like that. She was getting ahead of her capabilities. If only she'd kept her head about herself, she could have headed any trouble off at the pass. What a shame; I thought she had a better head on her shoulders than that. She'd have never been head of the class with that sort of attitude.

Looks like she was feeling a bit light headed.

Another example of why this series is head and shoulders above the rest of the genre.
