She emotionally abandoned him at the very least.

No one ever discussed about shamisen yet. The traditional shamisen is made from cat skins. So, the derogatory term for people who made instrument is called Nekogoroshi, but the anime Nekogoroshi-hen has nothing to do with the term.

He was pretty happy living with his grandfather. So I wouldn't say it really count as straight up abandoning.

The way Umeko described her own behavior makes me think she abandoned them because she wanted a bigger life of her own. Do we know where she and her husband lived when they had the boys? Was it in a city like Tokyo or like the rural village where the grandfather lived? If the latter I can see Umeko deciding that, since the boys seemed to like living with their grandfather, she could leave them with him and begin the pursuit of her own career.

They changed the whole OP. I think I liked the old one better.

Really liked the part where they explained the history of Tsugaru Shamisen.

I dunno what it is about anime based around music... Beck, K-On, This show... I'm always drawn in to it.

I think if there was an anime about Kazoos, I'd watch that too.

This has become a more or less typical "sports" anime by now. I'm still enjoying it, but I can't help comparing it to Kono oto tomare and feel it lacks the spark this one had.

I thought Billiken, for all the excitement around it, was rather boring.

I more or less saw it going down that direction once the whole team competition was announced, so I'm not surprised. Still enjoying it.

The acclaim seemed to reflect their ability to stay together. I agree the piece itself was rather dull. Too much strumming and not enough melody.

The choice of "billiken" is strange. It's the mascot of the small Jesuit Saint Louis University. A lot of us took to Google to learn about the billiken when SLU made the NCAA College Basketball tournament a few years back. Here its picture:

Seems to be a Missouri thing. It began life as a "charm doll:"

The Billiken is a charm doll created by an American art teacher and illustrator, Florence Pretz of Kansas City, Missouri, who is said to have seen the mysterious figure in a dream.

Why a shamisen group has that name is beyond me.

Billiken is a sort of unofficial Osaka mascot since there was a statue of one at an old theme park about a century ago. Somebody thought it looked like one of the Seven Lucky Gods or something, and it became like an Osaka Kami.

It's funny because when I look at the drawing on the Wiki page that Florence did the face looks kind of Kappa-ish, with the way the lines of the face connect, the mouth looks sort of like a beck.

Wow. It really did take over.

I noticed that while there were a lot of statues of the Billiken, there was no mascot of the modern variety like these:

Is that because he's a semi-deity and not an otter?

Oh, the things you learn from watching anime!
