When will it be decided? The current news from Fukushima are not the best to promote Tokyo for the Olympics.

What was that of a poor job by Xinhua reporting the news?

Somebody ought to be sacked in the morning.

So, will these be the Anime Olympics, I wonder?

If Britain can shove James Bond into their opening ceremony, I don't see why Japan shouldn't have Gundam or Godzilla in theirs.

Hope to see a HAL power suit in use at some stage of it.

I vote the Straw Hats as the official mascots of the Olympics

Its more likely to have AKB48 in it.

That will be a disaster.

Some Yahoo article said Istanbul lost votes because of Syria, but I don't hear any worries of Godzilla...

Well people want to see Godzilla. They want to forget about Syria.

I guess Madrid was too boring?

So, I see that Tokyo won the bid for the 2020 Olympics. Construction will boom. Lots of infrastructure will be added. English language companies will likely see a boom (i.e. fad) in students. Lower class / working poor people will get pushed out of their homes, taxes will rise. Sales tax will get shunted to less-necessary sectors, many people will be excited. Many people will be angry. NIMBY will increase. Traffic will snarl. Tourists will increase. Attention will be diverted from the ongoing Level 3 problem at Fukushima....

I'd expect something like Gundam or Pikachu sighting in all the pomp and circumstance.

But those hoping for a 100,000 neo illuminated dance troupe doing Hare Hare Yukai would be a triffle dissappointed, as asskicking as that sounds.

Seriously though, not a HUGE surprise. Istanbul would have been interesting (totally new area) but recent unrest probably didn't help. Madrid was likely overshadowed by Spain's economic turmoil.

Frankly speaking, from what I gleam from the news reports, IOC bids seem like part rational analysis, part pie in the sky wonder, part snake oil and part ass kissing, not sure on the ratio but you catch my drift.

Anyways, my town of DC is trying to mull hosting the BIG GAME(S), doubt it will happen though.

You know, this will be interesting to watch.

All this stuff has happened before but they've been most noticable (or at least i remember the drama) in western hetergenous societies where fault lines are much more marked and conflict is likely to be much greater.

Japan prides itself on it's "oneness" so how much conflict will really occur, and more to the point just how much will the shinbun and terebi actually cover such events. Such conflict is media red meat in the West but Japan....I wonder.
