Well, she (and her daughters) are family to him in the same sense as Sakura (outside of HF), Taiga and Ilya are "family" to Shirou, I suppose. They're not truly related to him in any way, but given how he feels about the Matous, Aoi's children are the closest thing he has to family, and IIRC they call him "uncle" (although I think that that may be a standard way to address any older male who a child is reasonably familiar with...).

No argument here. He's the only character in Zero who I really actually like (well, excluding the lolis...).

Let us all search for pics of Kariya, and see if one of us can actually find a few of him being happy.

I doubt it. There might be one with him with Aoi and her daughters somewhere, but I'm not sure.

I have thought of a few fic ideas along those lines, though, where he manages to actually save Sakura (and dies happy or is somehow saved), she doesn't get given to the Matou family in the first place (and so he doesn't have to save her) and even one where he marries Aoi instead of Tokiomi.

He's the tragic character of the story, because you see what he's willing to do to himself to save Sakura, and you know that he isn't successful. Probably the reason why he is my second favorite character in Zero (after Kiritsugu)

You know in some ways, a Fate Zero adaptation before a Heaven's Feel adaptation works out better for Kariya since some people won't know that it ends in tragedy so his final moments will be all the more brutal and unexpected for the viewers.

Haak, I double-checked the age of consent in Japan, and it is 12. Though it says 13, they start counting age at 1, while most of the western world starts at 0. So, yes, 12 year old's are of legal age in Japan... and many of my friends are still bothered by the fact that I know this.
