Good for him - Asa's always seemed like a pretty bright kid. His comments about Eva aren't exactly Rhodes Scholar material but they get the gist of the issue basically correct, and he's certainly got good taste in anime.

The first and the third, with the third partially edited.

Good compromise adaptation. All the highs and big moments are present (if somewhat edited), and while the main Peter and Valentine moments are either somewhat wasted are completely absent (which is completely understandable and even a little acceptable), the overall presentation is strong and well grounded. The leads are quite good (really only Asa Butterfield and Harrison Ford can be considered leads, but Davis, Steinfield and Kingsly all have their moments, also the bullies are nicely menacing), the special effects were very good (especially the battle room sequences) and the directIon was fairly tight. Sadly the pacing was off and some of the stronger emotional moments were buried under the bad pacing. Still a very strong adaptation and a strong film. 80/100.

Wow! That raises hope if you are saying this. I held out watching it this weekend just because most of the blockbusters are rather hyped up than good. If you are saying it is good than the chances of it's being good is 8/10. I like those odds.

I'm not sure I agree. Though it's been a real long time since I read the book.

My main problem was that it didn't look like the humans were all that desperate.

IIRC, in the book, they sent fleets to the various bug worlds so they'd arrive at roughly the same time, and each one had to win in one offensive.

Here, before Ender even got involved, they'd pushed the bugs all the way to their homeworld and have free rein in space. So what did they need the kids for anyway?

Other, somewhat lesser problems:
- they didn't really show off Ender's tactical genius. Not enough battleroom antics, so we didn't get a real feel for his superiority.
- they put all their eggs in one basket with the Little Doctor.

I think a bigger question is why there was a need to continue to fight the war on xenocidal terms at that point. If humanity has had access to the bug homeworld for years, one of the priorities should have been to at least made more solid attempts at trying to establish communication and negotiate a peace agreement, or at least ascertain if the formics were still hostile.

The big reason they couldn't afford to try that in the books was because the formic worlds were about 80 years out earthtime, and if the formics were hostile, the only possible measure they could take was to launch a relativistic counterattack right away and fight it out as soon as they arrived.

the movie twist is great, and I like how they fool ender to do his duty, if not because of that lie, he should have failed his last mission
