He was never really dead. Or at least not Marvel or DC dead, where they have funerals with dead bodies, or remains blasted to atoms, etc., and then show up again years later like Bobby f'n Ewing hopping out of the shower, only with a less sensible explanation for their absence...
Byakuya certainly should have been dead, though, hence the "ludicrously unkillable". ...At least he didn't "fall to pieces" like Hiyori did...

Felt like making this one:
Ichigo got trolled by his Zanpakuto and his Quincy power since he became a shinigami a year or two ago. Renji had his Zanpakuto for god knows how many years, fought side by side and it still doesn't trust him.

Actually, when you think about it, it makes sense that Renji never had his full Bankai. It was called Hihiou (Baboon King), even though it took the form of a giant bone snake.

With regards to half its name being used, we do have a precedent for that, albeit only in Shikai.

I read something on another forum that caught my attention. Renji's sword is a baboon with a snake tail. So far, the baboon has always been respectful to Renji, while the snake was always rude. So...subtle foreshadowing...in Bleach?

Zabimaru is weird...the baboon and snake think differently despite being one body (and the zanpakuto rebellion had them separated) but it's still only one sword. I suppose its power can be split like that, but...yeah, iunno, it could have been more consistent, I guess?

Kubo's problem isn't ability, it's consistency. His good moments are pretty good (the entire SS arc, generally) and his bad moments are really bad (the entire Fullbringer Arc, except for hot boss MILF).
