It's unfortunate, that press would have problems getting into panels at all. I always thought they were treated similar to, if not better then premier badge holders, at least when it came to getting into panels. But good to know that things worked out better for you this year.

The idea is that as panels/premieres go, press waits in the premier line. I never had any problem with that. If I'm the 100th person in the premiere line, great. That's what the official policy dicates.

The problem is that in prior years, I've had line nazis tell me "You can't be in the this line - premiere badge only". You show them the rules, no difference. Do they legitimately not know, or just like being assholes? I even had one guy tell me "You don't belong here, this is for fans." Well, WTF do you think I am?

Fortunately that didn't happen this year. Hopefully that represents real progress and not an aberration.

With AX 2018 a little over two weeks away, what is everyone gearing up for?

I was quite happy with the Go Nagai announcement.

Okada will be at AX premiering her newest work, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms. And of course it's at the same time as the convert I've already paid to go to. AX and their scheduling.

Guardian Enzo will you be doing press again this year?

Sadly, no - one of the downsides of being in Japan again is no A/X. I will miss it - and I know that feeling of frustration with their scheduling (especially Saturday) all too well.

Or both, as is usually the case!

I will say this - in the relatively short span of years I've been attending/covering, A/X has materially improved. The door staff seems better prepared, they've added more entrances for press/staff. The scheduling is still a nightmare and the communication from the press office is a joke, but they at least try and change. I think the addition of mailing badges out beforehand will be a great improvement.

Agreed. This will be year 10 for me, and while each year has it's highs and lows, I do think over all they've improved. They've expanded decently, and have a much better guest selection over all.

Meanwhile in the East Coast, some of us Otakon attendees are concerned about the Unite the Right rally happening a mile from the convention center on the same weekend.

Looks like they've reached the limits of what LACC can handle.

And there's really no where else for them to go, unless they want to move down to San Diego, so they'll likely be at LACC for a while yet.

Anyway, I've ordered my badge for next year, and mostly enjoyed this year. Just the usual complaints, scheduling issues and lack of autograph transparency with AX partners.

No kidding. Although in some respects it doesn't feel anymore crowded then it use to. But that's probably in part to how AX has changed things. Most room line ups are outside, so you don't have people standing in line in hall ways taking up space. The event is more spread out with the inclusion of the JW Marriott, Kentai Hall and the Entertainment Hall.

Anime Expo 2020 Cancelled Due to COVID-19:

"Ray Chiang, CEO of The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA),
announced on Friday that this year's Anime Expo convention has been cancelled due
to the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation. The event was planned for July
2-5. Chiang stated:

"With the COVID-19 situation continually changing, as well as more restrictions in
place worldwide and in our host city Los Angeles, we can't in good faith move
forward with this year's event. We know it will affect all of you differently and we
did not come to this decision lightly."

Chiang added that badge holders will have the option to either get refunds or roll over
their badge to the 2021 event, which is slated for July 2-5. He asked for patience as
the process for refunds and rollover will take time. In addition, hotel rooms booked
through ConferenceDirect in the AX official hotel block will automatically be cancelled.
Those who booked hotels outside of that service will need to contact their hotel
directly.

The organizers of the San Diego Comic-Con convention also announced earlier on
Friday that this year's event has been cancelled due to COVID-19 and California
Governor Gavin Newsom's statements."
