It could be one of the old Italian battleships. Giulio Cesare was built around the same time as Kongo and Hiei. She survived both wars and was transfered to the Soviet Navy in 1949 (Novorossiysk) until she hit a mine in 1955. A big companion for Verniy.

She was originally armed with 13 x 12" guns (two twin turrets and three triple turrets). They removed the center triple turret between the wars for larger engines and boilers which increased her speed from 21.5 knots to 27 knots. 12" guns were rebored to 12.6" (320mm) but are rather small compared to the other battleships in the game.

The much newer Roma was sunk while defecting to Allied service by a German Fritz X radio guilded bomb.

Or the trollish alternative: Armored Cruisers of the Kasuga-class (Giuseppe_Garibaldi-class_armored cruiser). Built in Italy around 1900. Kasuga was still technically in service in World War II. Sister ship Nisshin was reportedly sunk by Yamato as a target ship. Kasuga was armed with a mixed battery of one 10" gun and two 8" guns plus lots of 6" guns. Entirely obsolete by 1920, much less 1940.

Can't say I'm surprised that they went the Italian road. Although to me the Italian ships don't have nearly the same appeal as a Prince of Wales or Hood.

I don't know if the Kancolle Staff does those in the first place, but from the announcement's time stamp alone it would fit.

Consider the following, they are Japanese gamedevs working on a game for Japanese audience. Moreover, Italian ships are much less of a nightmare to balance. If anything, a ship like Roma or Giulio Cesare will be likely like a undergunned Kongou with its own quirks. Also people at large (Unless its Ethiopia, Slovenia or Greece) don't have much grudge against Italy as far as WWII go, be it on the Axis side (ok, maybe Germans. Italy was like a load to them), or the Allies.

EDIT: Long story short - Italy was the "safest" route, by managing both sides' sensibilities and gameplay balance.

About Mutsuki class Kai ni, if it is other Mutsuki-class beside Mutsuki, Kisaragi, Yayoi, Uzuki that get kai ni, we can assume that Yadokari (やどかり) - Artist of most of Mutsuki-class ship and all Akatsuki-class ships - has become active again. Next special Type DD that will get kai ni might be one of Akatsuki-class ship which is drawn by him.

Well, this is only for the case that Kai ni will be drawn by the same person.

Edit: This spring, but not on the next update (10/04), there will be the Mutuski-class kai ni and also another special-type destroyer kai ni (other than Murakumo which will get kai ni 10/04).

Can't imagine it not being one of the Vittorio Veneto-class ones. All other Italian BBs would be just adding, for the lack of a better word, trash BBs.

If we're talking about Littorio-class, the ability to at least soak damage from torpedoes?

It is a surefire way to ensure CLTs and subs aren't as effective.
