I'm really looking forward to this one. It felt like Garden of Words was Shinkai returning to what he does best and it really showed. He's putting a lot of time and effort into this, so here's hoping he does something unique once more. And hopefully we don't have to wait until 2017 to see it outside Japan.

What a visual artist Shinkai is. He really is a freak of nature. Plot looks rather interesting as well.

Bloody S+ tier production staff. Not only shinkai but also mashiro ando is involved as the animation director. Looks like that cross road ad a few years back had a postivie effect so we have the anohana char designer back as well but this time on a whole film.
Between this and mamoru hosodas boy and the beast... oh boy. Not only in the tv front does 2016 look amazing but for movies too. Its 2007/2011 again... and it was about time we had a good year for anime after some awful years. |

The plot looks interesting from the trailer. It seems like we'll get a slightly more light-hearted, less dramatic tone for this one which I wouldn't mind seeing for a change.

Samsung and Sony need Shinkai to do commercials. 4K sets will be flying off the shelves.
The plot sounds similar to Freaky Friday, and the trailer gives off a more whimsical vibe than his usual works. Almost reminds me of Summer Wars with the character designs. Curious about the written notes on the arms though. I'm guessing they can't mentally communicate with each other. Maybe they'll also use their phones to leave messages to one another.

For the folks in the SoCal AO during Anime Expo. I'll be half a world away then, so I'll avoid this thread best I can until August...

I'm really tempted to make the trip to AX for the premiere, but knowing the crowds I won't have a rat's chance in hell of getting in. Damn shame since I'd love to see a Shinkai work on the big screen.
I just hope the two leads learning each others' names doesn't trigger some deus ex machina ending.

I wonder if Kimi no na wa will see a similar release as did Kotonoha no niwa: the same day the Japanese theatrical release occurred, they also released the iTunes version, and the home release was only a few weeks later.

Movie released over the weekend to solid reviews and number one at the box office, with a take of 770 million yen on the first two days. This beats every previous Shinkai record by an incredible margin, even if you combine them.
It is also a massive opening for a non-Disney/Dreamwork/tentpole, non-ghibli and non-one piece animated feature. (Not discounting the fact that this is still a Toho backed production; they must be very pleased about the double success of Godzilla and this.) Great news all around, and very promising for Shinkai's future directorial prospects. Edit: Final weekend gross pegs the movie at a 930 million yen opening weekend (1.27 billion yen counting Friday) making it the 13th biggest opening for an animated theatrical feature in Japan. Shinkai's officially in the big boys league now. I can't wait to watch this. Hoping some distributor can bring it over to my country for a limited run. (We get some of the bigger stuff, like One Piece, from time to time.) Last edited by com_gwp; 2016-08-30 at 08:46. |

Anime Ltd has licensed the film for the UK and Ireland and they'll be showing it subbed (and dubbed apparently) at cinemas. They're also targeting a 2017 home video release which is more helpful for folks like me who are a couple of hours away by plane from the UK

I watched it in Japan...
So good T_T I hate the classic Shinkai Makoto-style ending though... (Don't take this the wrong way.) This anime movie renewed my love for 2D animation. Also, Neofilms, a Hong Kong movie distributor, teased this movie on their FB page, so looks like I'll be able to rewatch it!
