Something like K-On! or Saki
I'm very much enjoying Steins;Gate, Kamisama Dolls, and Tiger and Bunny.
However, all have gotten pretty intense/dark as of late, so I'm in the mood for something more lighthearted or upbeat to compliment it with. ... Yes, I mean a "cute girls doing cute things" show. Basically, something like K-On! or Saki. So, any suggestions?

Now I am wondering if you forgot about Yuruyuri already?
Alternative if you hadn't been enjoying it then, there is A-Channel from last season which is very very much a lighthearted "cute girls doing cute things" show . Or looking back a bit I could suggest Lucky Star for such a series, or Sasameki Koto is romance/shoujo-ai at times, but it has lots of lighthearted parts to it.

Have you tried this season's The iDOLM@STER? Plenty of cute girls (14 to be exact) and it has been quite entertaining so far. Production values are also excellent for this show.
How about Nichijou, for something energetic and upbeat? If you happen to hate (or not interested in) the first episodes of it, I recommend you try again around ep 13, that's when the series redeems itself and becomes incredibly fun and awesome week after week.

Thanks to Konakaga, raduccio, Dist, papermario13689, ahelo, and Ziziphus for all of your suggestions.
A few points in response: 1) Watched all of Azumanga Daioh and Bamboo Blade, and really liked both. Those definitely fit the sort of show I'm looking for here. 2) Watched all of A-Channel, except the Specials. I really liked A-Channel, but never got around to their specials. Anybody here think the Specials are worth checking out? 3) Watch some of almost all of the other suggestions, but dropped some and/or put them on hold. However, I think I'm going to give Yuruyuri and Nichijou another chance based on what I've read here, and elsewhere. 4) Only show suggested that I haven't watched at all is Ichigo Mashimaro. So thanks for that, Dist! Will make a point to check it out.

I really like Nichijou - but it is definitely not everyone's cup of tea.
Azumanga Daioh was GREAT, but you have already seen that. On a slightly more "silly" note, have you ever tried Yumeiro Pattisiere? (Or however you spell the word!) The A-Channel specials didn't really add a whole lot to the series proper imo, but they are short, so why not? I am really enjoying The iDOLM@STER at the moment ... it is my biggest surprise for this season. Normally I suggest something from the World Masterpiece Theater ... but they almost all have serious elements to them - although there are shows with a sprinkling of what I think you are talking about, the serious elements are always definitely there, so something from that may not be the sort of thing you are interested in atm....

If you're ok with a bit of a slow pace: sketchbook full color's , I'll always remain a fanboy of that show (its manga is where my avatar is from) , there's also cute cat doing cute things as a bonus.
I've watched every episode multiple times and it's always my go to anime whenever I'm feeling down and need something to cheer me up. You might want to check out the Tamayura OVAs since a full show will come out this fall. Joke answer:The 2nd half of Hanasaku Iroha

GA Geijutsuka Art Design Class, Hidamari Sketch jumps into mind. I reckon you could try the minami-ke series, but if i list that, then I would have to put soredemo machi wa mawatteiru and mitsudomoe on the list as well, which i am not doing...^^

Even if the show itself (prolly the show I am most looking forward to atm precisely b/c I hope they continue in the vein of the OVA's) is a total disaster the 4 OVA's are good material.

I'll go off the wall a bit to present something else... YMMV, and I have a bizarre sense of humor sometimes, so beware.
Puni Puni Poemi is a short, lulzy, and wtf OVA series. And much like Saki it has tons of Yuri implications! Also, in the same vein is School Days: Magical Heart Kokoro-chan is a silly OVA that is nothing like its original counterpart. Just very lighthearted silliness. You really don't get any closer to cute girls doing cute things then in magical girl parodies! A more marginal choice is To love ru; it has lots of cute girls doing cute things and is extremely lighthearted, but it does drag horrifically in some places. Plus it's a harem which means the male lead is automatically fail, but hey you've been watching enough Mari Okada scripts to get used to it. I would suggest random episodes here and there, that's how the series works best-- in small pieces.

I'll second (again) the Minami-Ke recommendation, but throw in the 2nd and 3rd seasons. While there are a lot of people who didn't like these seasons, I personally liked them more as the first season. They're lighthearted for sure so it should be a good try, though it's not an all girl's cast.
If that is fine, then give a shot with Hatsukoi Limited as well. Not an all girl's cast either, and the genre is romantic comedy but it might fit your tastes.. I liked this one a lot.
