VirtualDub problem

now why i put in a *.avi file into virtual dub it says

couldn't locate decompressor for format 'XVID'(unknown)
virtualdub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video.
direct show codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable.

any 1 know how i can fix this?

if not can some 1 teach me another way that i can make animation gif rips out of a vid? thanks

For future reference. You should install the Gordian Knot Codec pack if you're gonna use Virtual Dub.

Not really, the only codec I have installed is xvid. If I need to do something with a divx file, I just use ffdshow via avisynth. Ffdshow also has a vfw encoding module with quite a few codecs.
