Leiji Matsumoto, author of Captain Harlock, passes away at age 85

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/new...-at-85/.195093

The Netflix generation may not know him. But his name resonated a lot with the gen x and early millenials. He was behind Captain Harlock, Esmeralda, Galaxy Express 999, The Cockpit, had a hand in Space Battleship Yamato and the Daft Punk worked with him to make the 1 hour anime music video Interstella 5555. He helped codifying the space pirate archetype in Japanese media and he have had a very recognizable art style.

He will be missed as those born between The late 1960s and early 1990s are seeing another part of their childhood gone.

What a sad news to wake up to today. Matsumoto Leiji inspired so many animators and mangaka and was one of the all time greats. Really sad to see him pass away. I hope he left us with few regrets

Holy shit I knew he was old but not that old. He's actually older than Hayao Miyazaki.

RIP. The legends are slowly passing.

Hail to a legend. To have one title make it big is quite something. To do it four times - just wow. The guy actually made those titles because his early years working on shoujo manga ticked him off so much into doing Yamato, Harlock, 999 and 5555. To endure a point in your life where you're so far away from doing what you want to do, then get there and shine - what a man.

I think many Americans of a certain age shared a ritual of getting up at 6 to watch Star Blazers (in my case on WGN Chicago), and being exhausted for school.

I had no idea who Matsumoto Leiji was of course. I didn’t even know what anime was. But that was my Seed of Destiny.

I can think of nothing more Japanese than a space opera with a train.

Meanwhile here in car-centric America, Elon Musk shot a Tesla into orbit around the sun.

RIP, massive legend for anime and manga. I really enjoyed some of its works and shame to see him go.

Reading some of the messages authors and animators have posted, he seemed like a genuinely cool and respectable guy, sending encouragement letters to young talent. Not one of those geezers always ranting about how anime used to be so much better or others who actually hate the medium and its fans.

RIP.
