Ah good, so they did go more into depth on Kim. I knew the girl I knew from the Soul Eater manga couldn't really be an uncaring bully.
So Akane and Clay used to be in EAT, but transfered into NOT. Was that just to watch over Anya? They fell down a bit on the job, letting her go out alone after class, especially since there had been attacks made against students lately. And that seems to be plot-ish as well. Someone with a weird eye and a poison-laced claw trying to kill students. Seems connected to that sinister girl from the OP. Oh, and we meet Jackie.... Next time, moar Maka!

Hmm ... we finally get to catch a glimpse of the lady who shows up in the OP and is assumed to be the main foe of the story? I assume the finger claw fella was her follower or something, right?
Nice to see more about the "Witch of the Dormitories" too. Kim seems a sweet girl underneath her prickly exterior - I think Ox Ford (boo hiss on the obvious name here btw ) is right about her - and it was nice to see her help out Anya. Jacqueline looked pretty impressive too - a weapon type that is a flamethrower kinda box thing that can use that as a way of flying rocket style is convenient; I wonder if whoever uses her could also fly like that? Did it mention if she had a meister attached to her? Btw ... Tsugumi continues to be a nice sweet and well rounded character in my book, with her own flaws and strengths. Yep - there are many things like I like about the series which, while not stupendous has been able to consistently deliver and slowly weave a pretty good narrative.

I'm kind of disappointed with the direction this has gone... They completely skip training/class segments and there's a weird split between utterly off-topic slice of life crap and various flashes of plot... and things introduced in the first episode like her choosing a partner suddenly don't matter in the slightest.
I was hoping for more of a Harry Potter vibe I guess. Where the school actually means something and isn't just a backdrop for random things to happen in and around. Does the protagonist learn anything in class? We don't know and it doesn't seem to matter. Though she's apparently made no progress whatsoever in the central aspect of her life at this point--being a weapon. I get slice of life and I don't mind it at all. But it's just not being done very well here I think. |

The interactions between Meme and Tsugumi are the highlights of this anime so far |

As shown here Anya, Meme and Tsugumi are not exactly fighters. They damsels in distress that has to be rescued by two bishi upperclassmen that are.
While the Yuri is strong here there is a posibility for a boy-girl romance like Ox for Kim. If only Tsugumi, Anya and Meme will only stop to look around other than each other. |

Anya and Meme are both capable of fighting, but only at a relatively human level. The problem is, in the Soul Eater universe the enemies quickly move beyond mere human capabilities. Also, the girls have little practical experience.

We've seen both Anya and Meme fight, and they aren't bad by any means. They have potential. But they aren't really training to be top fighters, so they aren't getting as much combat-focus as the EAT students, most likely.

Normally. Overcome. Target.
This trio of girls are novices and their class status reflects that. Anya has some martial arts training and Meme seems to have some moves of her own, but that's all they got going for themselves. Experience? fighting real enemies? They don't have any of that. Tsugumi can't even fully transform yet, much less transform when she needs too. Why should we even expect them to be able to put up a fight on their own at this point? This is unlike Clay and Akane who transferred from the EAT class; their place in that class alone implies their higher level fighting ability. Though in this series, the fighting is not as much of a focus as it was in the last series.
