Well, in the original story,

Spoiler for events in the LN that did not happen in the anime:

Beatrix and the stasi do show up and save everyone.

I don't know why they changed unless they wanted to make the stasi look even more ridiculously evil.

Perhaps they were trying to make it extra clear to the audience of this compressed adaptation that the Stasi was sending Pham and Katia to that fortress in order to get rid of them? Having the Stasi use the BETA to get rid of someone else beforehand does make the intention with that bit pretty clear.

I have been hearing that this adaptation is quite compressed and combines some scenes. Supposedly the anime its trying to actually finish the story (not necessarily a bad thing, I think Total Eclipse suffered somewhat from not being able to tell its full story). Although I only read a little bit of translated source material, I did notice one combined scene myself:

Beatrice hadn't shown up yet in the part of the series I'd read a fan translation of, but the scene where Katia gets beat up did. In the original version of the scene, the political officer is the hostile party instead of Beatrice (though I think the pilot who actually beats up Katia is the same). The political officer is furious that someone she's responsible for is expressing ideology that could get her in trouble.

Some more problems with recrutments and immersion: She has never piloted a Balaleika before or trained with it and you take her out to field exercise?

Unlike others I don't have that big a problem with the Stasi's actions. This is a giant war with hundreds of thousands of men. If killing 4 or 5 guys could be crucial we have already lost.

We didn't see how the battle ended, maybe they did show up, it just wasn't shown.

And now to some obsessive observations:
If you pause the video when Theo reads on the computer you will actually see Alex von Strauchwitz's name once.
And when he's reading the article about his father the cut off article at the left is exactly the same article again.
The subtitles said that they were retreating to the fortress Neuenhagen, but the displayed text said they were retreating from Neuenhagen.
Neuenhagen is very roughly 50km from the Oder, right at the outskirts of Berlin 25km from it's center.

Overall good episode, 7/10.

Explaining that would be spoiler and dampen the effects of future events so i won't try and explain it. If you really want to know i would suggest waiting for later episodes, if you're unwilling to wait and really want to know go to the Muv-Luv wiki and search for Lise Hohenstein.
