There's been theories that it wasn't really Itachi who did it, thoeries that he was forced to do it, it's been stated that he did it to test his strength, maybe he was bored, maybe he did all of it just to piss his brother off and create a future rival to his power, maybe he did it to limit the already limited amount of users of the Sharingan, or maybe killing off a certain amount of people from the same bloodline was a prerequisite for an even greater power than MS and has yet to be seen
Spoiler:
Take your pick. I personally think he did it because he could. But the real motive behind it may have been a combination of a few of the previous reasons. Last edited by Xelsol; 2006-12-04 at 19:38. |

I've always thought that it was his initiation to join Akatsuki. We don't know when Itachi first learned of Akatsuki. It could be that for a time he was associating with them while still remaining a Konoha ninja. And to get into that group you have to show that you're worthy right? So everyone's given a task to complete before they're let in to show their strength and loyalty.

Spoiler for Sabaku Kyu:
Spoiler:
As for Itachi it probably was to get into Akatsuki but then in his mind the only thing that can beat a MS user is another MS user so he had to leave Sasuke alive to push himself further. And Itachi is just a psycho freak. Last edited by Rachy; 2006-12-05 at 09:38. |

He killed his best friend and gained Mangekyu. He went crazy with power. He probly figured "Hey if I get this much from killing one person... maybe I get more from killing everyone"
Plain and simply, he went nuts. And I think that if this is his test to get in Akatsuki... I think he asked that this would be his task, and that it was his idea. |

What I think is going to really answer the question is the ties he has with Sasuke. In particular, he was showing great concern that Sasuke wasn't giving in to the hatred; even to the extent of personally throwing away a vital Akatsuki mission to correct this. There are a few other bits and pieces with this tie as well that I am sure is going to make a comeback.

I always thought orochimaru had something to do with it
1)in the anime it seems like oro has his hands in every thing evil that goes on 2)the timing would have been right. 3)it'd be ironic and fitting. Oro has already lured sasuke out of konoha with the carrot that is power. Maybe he did the same for Itachi as a youth, offering him the MS along with other things. As to why he slaughtered the clan, I say orochimaru had something to do with it. |

Well, the most logical reason is he did it to join up with Akatsuki. Everyone had to kill a crap load of people in order to get mixed up with them. Oh yeah, and I think Itachi may actually love his little brother. He knows that Sauske needs to become strong enough that no one needs to protect him. So, he took him to the only path that would lead to that power. Hatred
