The manga is readable enough that I will keep going for now. It just seems like your basic fantasy world OP protagonist power fantasy trip. Protagonist is hard-luck urchin granted with special power that makes him nigh-invincible.

Not sure if the light novels do it much better but the world building in the manga is very weak. It just feels very patchwork. Some of this here and a little there. Everyone has skills, levels, and stats. Everyone has a personal menu screen they can pull up.

How is this possible? What caused the world to become like this? Is there any more insight in the light novels?

Fate. My issue with Fate is that we know nothing about him other than that his name is Fate, he gets abused by the other knights, and his only job is to sometimes guard the gate. That's it. We don't learn anything else about him other than that he stumbles on this hidden unlock power.

I do kind of like Greed, as cheap as it sort of was the main character just finding him in a trash pile.

Did you really have to name the main character Fate? Couldn't you at least give him a last name?

First off, everyone in the world is born with Skill. Said Skill sort of define your life, since it gives the user talent at something.

Fate's skill was actually useless and caused a LOT of problems for him, if you had bothered to read. It caused him constant hunger and doesn't grant him any upgrades at ALL.

Spoiler:

His skill turns out to be a case of "Cursed With Awesome": Killing and absorbing life/souls sate the hunger, but the stronger the last meal, the stronger the hunger. In fact, if he left it for too long, it start to become obvious - with his eyes going red - and there's a very high chance he'll lose himself to the hunger.

So no, it's not "your basic fantasy world OP protagonist power fantasy trip" since that power came with a heavy downside.

Second, going by the LN, we learned plenty:
- He came to the city looking for work, but his skill doesn't help him.
- He's dirt poor because of not capable of other works
- He really hates the sons of the family that currently hires him, but can't because he have no powers and no money.

And so on and so forth.

Finally, he's not the only one with this sort of skill in the world. Point of fact: The dark skinned girl a few pages back is also one, with her skill name being Wrath.

^may I ask something, reading the translation, It quite obvious that Roxis good guy (girl), being nice to mc, however I do not believe that she has any reason to, I mean she's good, and noble and all, but she definitely over friendly to fate (even possible romance). So is there any explanation for these=
