Raw Providers and Reading Sites Issues

I'm creating this thread to funnel all of the recent discussion over the troubles over raw providers and reading sites into one place.

As some of you may be aware, there have been two major issues recently that have affected major internet raw providing sites and manga reading sites. I'll explain briefly for those who do not understand what is going on.

First, major Japanese publishers have decided to take a firmer stance against raw providers of manga. This is largely because the manga market has been declining in Japan, and part of the blame is the increased amount of scans available on the internet. This is has led to people being able to read scans before the actual publication hits the streets, which in turn means there's less motivation to actually buy the manga once it's available. While this issue is primarily targeted at Japanese consumers it also affects licensed titles in other countries.

What this means is that major raw providing sites have been dropping releases or shutting down completely. It doesn't mean that scans won't continue to be available, but it will make them more difficult to come by and readers outside of Japan will have longer waits for raws and translations.

The second major issue is that Google and their partners have decided to threaten manga reading sites with removal of their advertising (which keeps those sites up since they use a ton of bandwidth) due to their stance on "questionable" content such as lolicon and yaoi manga. This has led to some sites removing most of, if not all of, their mature manga.

While these issues will affect the ease of being able to view manga, those outside of Japan will still be able to find such content if they dig around a little bit.

However, what this means for our forum is that the moderators will have to be tougher on links to content. So I'm establishing two rules that will affect everyone here.
1. You are not allowed to post links to any raws, translations, or scans of licensed manga or novels, or any site that contains such content, PERIOD. I don't care that your favorite site shut down or removed content and now you have to look somewhere else. That somewhere else is not here. We will remove any such links and users will be warned/infracted.

2. Keep discussion of this topic in this thread only. Any further attempts of derailing any other thread on the forums with this discussion will result in deleting of posts. Keep the manga/novel threads focused on discussing the story, not where or when you'll get the next chapter or to whine about how you can't find your fix.
.

With that said, this thread will be stickied and open for discussion. Keep it civil and don't post just to whine or there will be consequences.

So if the manga gets licensed we are not allowed to post related raws or scans anymore, is that right?

Even in the case that we may use a page as part of the discussion or comparison to something else, are we still not allowed to post it,?

Both of these questions are answered in the Guideline sticky but for discussions sake -

Correct. However, we are not aware of any raw or scan site that lists only unlicensed content (we consider licensed to mean for distribution in the US), so links to such sites are not allowed regardless of the status of the title being linked.

You are entitled to link a page or panel as part of discussion (since it is fair use), as long as it is first uploaded to a site such as Photobucket or Imageshack. We do not allow hotlinking from sites that host licensed content. This means hotlinking from a manga reading or raw site is not allowed.

If such links are posted please report them so a moderator can deal with it accordingly.

  • Heiji-sama said that Kodansha is planning on targeting Mangafox.
  • Shueisha is planning to do something big in the summer against piracy.
  • Google adsense forced sites such as Mangafox to take down their mature manga with content like Yaoi, because it goes against the policy set by google.
  • Mangahelpers took measures like banning japanese visitors and stop hosting Shueisha's content.

So yeah, we can expect some good times...

Here's a good article regarding the whole raw manga crack down that's been going on by Sankaku Complex(NSFW)...

Here's a quote from the article..

Quote:
Some consider the real reason for Shueisha’s anger at illegal scans to be quite different to what the publisher would have fans believe – one journalist claims that the real fear of publishers is actually digital distribution as a whole, and the disruption it threatens to the manga industry’s traditional control over mangaka.

He points out that the main earner for mangaka is not serialised magazine sales but sales of the compiled volumes, or tankobon, much as it is sales of the DVD over TV broadcasts in the world of anime.

With illegal uploads sales are indeed impacted, so some mangaka have responded by simply publishing the serialisation on their homepage and relying on tankobon sales – a growing proportion are said to not to care if the serialisation takes place online, as ultimately it serves only as an advertisement for the tankobon.

Indeed, Onemanga apparently has suspended a lot of their own manga for the time being. Here's from OM a list of manga who fell victim (there are some old ones that got removed due to license issues but it gives a good overview) from Onemanga:

Spoiler for Long list:

As for OM it's not the case, for example Gantz has been removed looong time ago due to its content.

It still comes down to money. Hosting streaming and/or large amounts of large quality images that people constantly download is very bandwidth intensive and expensive. You have to pay for it somehow.

Well here in Russia bandwidth is usually not a problem - if you have upload 4 times larger than download - you do not pay for it. They only problem I see here - amounts of scans

tsk... I'm ready to pay for damn raws at this point, if manga publishers will have them available via their sites worldwide

It seems that they aren't permanently removing all of those. Rather they took down everything in their mature category, and scattering of other stuff they had tagged as being ecchi, until they could actually look at it and sort things out.

Mangastream received a C&D from Viz thanks to their Iphone App:

Here's a quote:

Quote:
Many of you already noticed that our new iPhone app disappeared last Friday. Gratisites (our app's developer) and Apple received requests from VIZ Media, LLC to remove their titles from our application.

Since we scanlate 12 series, and 9 of them are VIZ Media properties, we decided to just take down the entire application from distribution.

They have also requested that their titles be removed from the MangaStream Android application, which will be done at the API level on Thursday April 29th.

It's unfortunate, but we understand and respect VIZ Media's position.
I hope we won't get bad results thanks to Viz noticing them and their releases.

Same goes for OM:

Quote:
Notice: Because Del Rey has requested that we remove Air Gear from our site, all chapters have been removed until further notice. We're trying to see if we can put it back up, but for now no Air Gear >__<".
Quote:
Notice: Because Viz has requested that we remove Claymore from our site, all chapters have been removed until further notice. We're trying to see if we can put it back up, but for now no Claymore >__<".
etc.

I'm pretty sure those particular ones are just OM using the system they have in place to suspend a series for their "Check and see if it has content that Google objects to." suspensions.

This is starting to get worser Apparently right now there's a heavy discussion in Japan between Mangaka and the goverment about a recently proposed law. With this law, the goverment intends to ban all sexual behaviors of fictional characters who look below 18.

Quote:
"Any character that regardless of actual age has an appearance of being under 18, and has a possibility of causing youths to lust for or possibility of bringing this fantasy to real life, will have to be censored" source: Japanator
The consequences? Many shounen has fanservices from under 18 years old characters like for example HSDK and Negima etc who will fall under this law. Shounen and even Shoujo (Seinen is safe) would not be able to escape and therefore a there's a lot of protesting by famous Mangaka.

http://www.asahi.com/national/update...003150446.html

Some of the Mangaka who are opposing this law:

Quote:
Akamatsu Ken (Love Hina, Negima)
Chiba Tetsuya (Ashita no Joe )
Fujiko Fujio A (Ninja Hattori-kun)
Takao Saitō (Golgo 13)
Gosho Aoyama (Detective Conan, YAIBA)
Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma ˝)
Mitsuru Adachi (Touch)
Moto Hagio (They Were Eleven)
Machiko Satonaka (Constellation of the Hunter)
Ryōhei Saigan (Kamakura Monogatari)
Tooru Fujisawa (GTO)
Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina)
Kaworu Watashiya (Kodomo no Jikan)
I don't care about Yaoi or shouta but this is pretty bad for the manga industry who will end up with huge losses if this law is approved.

The only mature manga I read is Ikkitousen, and thankfully there are sites that still provide the scans:

"... is a fan run site and we will not allow our advertisers to dictate to us how to they want our site to be run. If an advertiser does not like how we are running the site, we will simply find a new advertiser."
