Lulu's legions of underlings have failed him in such a disastrous scale. To think the majestic drama queen would be toppled so spectacularly when he hasn't even reigned for a full year! This is blasphemy, much like young Westlo.
Natsu's red lines have about as much accuracy as the stuff in Uncyclopedia, for I was nodding in approval when Suzaku rammed it into Lulu with all he's got. Quote:

She puts on a brave face now but she was like this when she saw the poll.
Spoiler for Cheesie's reaction:
Back on topic Sheryl ranked on another poll... this one about a Ranking of Anime Characters As a Marriage Partners... lol... no Ranka of course. |

1. Either extremely quiet and mysterious or 2. Totally independent and strong or possessing tsundere features. Not initially surprising until I discovered that... Rei Ayanami didn't make it, but Asuka did? Wow? Really? Rei didn't make it? She was the one and only anime sex symbol of the 90s! And even more surprising is the fact that none of the CC characters are on the list, nor is Lacus Clyne or Kira Yamato! - Tak

I was also shocked! I'm sure Rei fans are now going crazy. I noticed that the most of the characters on the list are from newer animes. I wonder if they just surveyed young people who are either very young or who have already forgotten the old animes. Well, Evangelion is not relatively that old since they have Rebuild of Evangelion. Oh well...

Don't diss Asuka.
I, for one, always preferred her spunky damaged-goods attitude over Rei's monotone. And I'd wager she was on par with Rei, in terms of popularity, even when the anime aired originally - also, she does have appeal towards a wider margin of viewers too, I'd guess. And I always thought she was the more recognized sex-symbol of Evangelion. I mean, I can sorta understand Rei's appeal, but... to me, it was always about Asuka.

Well, I wasn't around the internet all that much back then... But here, when it showed up on bootlegs (and later on TV), it was all about Asuka, really.
Rei was actually remembered more because of Megumi Hayashibara, around these parts...

Neon Genesis Reivangelion sounds better than Neon Genesis Asukagelion, lol
Seriously though, has Rebuild 2 been released already? Rebuild 2 will definitely be the entrance of Asuka.

Wow, now I'm really intrigued, trailer hunting time. I've been hyped up with this "re-take" of Eva ever since I read about it.
Edit: Just saw it, awesome man!

Sure tsundere has other points - are moe and so on, but you can't argue that they are more strong than housewife archetype before and arguably more independent as well. We can see it Evangelion characters. Rei is mysterious girl but she also has the silent submissiveness in her as well which is different from Asuka's independent nature. And there was no equality between Rei's and Asuka's popularity - it was ten years ago but I still remember well how Rei dominated Asuka in Japan very clearly. Now it is changing, Rei and Asuka are become more equal in terms of popularity, and not in western world where it almost always was this way, but in Japan as well which also in my opinion proves that stronger/modern women type becomes more and more trendy in anime. Sheryl is also more of a modern woman type, which is independent and strong (yet has weak side too). Ranka relies mostly on Moe factor - as in terms of character itself she doesnt have much to offer, and with more modern look into females role in society in Japan it is no wonder that Sheryl dominates over Ranka (though the episodes starting from 20 did not help Ranka very much too). To tell the truth a tsundere 'boom' which started somewhere around 2005-2006 was expected to end in two years time, but seeing how it still is going strong, we can expect even more tsundere characters pop out in the future, for better or worse. P.S. Voted for Sheryl, naturally. Hands down the best character in Macross F. |

To be fair, tsundere attributes are a stable in the Macross universe, and has little to do with the alleged recent popularity of tsundere characteristics. Let us not forget, the first and foremost tsundere heroine was Misa Hayase, followed by a certain Milia Janius.
Regardless, the perfect housewife characteristic is still very popular. Lets not forget Ah! My Goddess and a certain harem maid series. Speaking of EVA, while living in Japan during 96 ~ 97... Rei was clearly everywhere. She was on billboards, signs, magazines ... well, just about everything really. - Tak

I never said that we did not have had any tsunderes before. You are very right , Tak - Tsunderes characters have long history after all, yet their popularity is still fairly recent.
Ah! My Goddess is rather old series so no wonder about Bell. This type is still popular enough in Japan but not as it was lets say 8 years ago, simply because we have an increased interest in stronger more independent women now than it was before. And yes Rei-mania was everywhere. Rei still beats Asuka in some polls in Japan, but it is also the fact that Asuka with time was getting more and more popularity while Rei was starting to loose some. There is no more one sided Rei dominance over Asuka as it was in the beginning. In western, of course they both had more or less equal popularity to begin with, and Asuka even winning quite a few polls (which in japan in 96-97 would be something unimaginable). Evangeleon is still popular even before Rebuild's spark and both heroines still have fair ratings (for characters from old animes), not to mention that Asuka was one of the first really famous tsundere characters (her being a tsundere definitely helps with the whole recent tsundere popularity trend). |

As for other media in the 80s? Well, there were Gundam, Macross, Doraemon and Dragon Ball. For the rest? I didn't really give a shit. Hell, all the wives in Dragon Ball were tsundere. But I have to also point out, Rei-type characters are still very popular and on par with many archtypes today. After all, how can anyone forget CC? Then there are some who I cannot categorize, like Lacus Clyne. - Tak

I would classify CC closer to tsundere rather than just Rei-type, because of the way she verbally abuses Lulu and still has some mixed feelings about him.
I liked misa the most in original as well. Weird, justinstrife, we usually disagree with each other but in Macross and Macross F our tastes pretty much match. |

Well, since this thread is here, I voted for Ranka Lee, Ozma, and Leon.
Leon gets my vote because he seemed to be an unpredictable (and awesome) villain, and he didn't let up until the end of the series. I just wish Leon could've done more harm before getting arrested by the Intergalactic Space Force. Ranka Lee also gets my vote because really, that green hair and the signature "nyan nyan" thing is just awesome. Unlike Sheryl, she wasn't really angsty and whiny until later in the series, which by that time I could understand why Ranka Lee was upset.
