Well, then you need to consider the Thrones, Arche, Reborns, etc., all of which aren't much different then your typical GN-X or Ahead as far as usage of GN drives go.

A Gundam is a mobile suit that is called a Gundam... That's basically true for all of the timelines... Except for FC I guess, since Gundams = mobile fighters in that particular timeline.

You're right, I totally forgot about the Thrones, Arche and Reborns.

Regardless of the naming reasons for each series, overall design has something to do with it, particularly when it comes to the facial design (including the V-fin). How else would you recognize that it's a Gundam besides its power? A lot of the series have mobile suits matching or exceeding the capabilities of a Gundam, but aren't called such (with the exception of the GN-XIV and that's a bit... complicated there anyway).

^ I did some thinking about this and I realized that the only common aesthetic element from all Gundam designs (that I know please point out if I'm wrong) is the beard. The beard itself can sport a different color (usually red) or a different shape, but you will never see a Gundam without a beard. You would see Gundams without the V-fin (Ez-8), you would also see Gundams without the eyes (Mono-eye and Arche's 4 slits), but you'll always see a Gundam with a beard.

Although we have cheaters like Gun-Ez and Tallgeese 2 with a Gundam face but still not a Gundam. So in the end Brightman is right and it really does boil down to whatever happens to be named a Gundam. So here's how it is, you can't be a Gundam without a beard, but having a beard doesnt automatically classify you as a Gundam.

EDIT: missed out "doesnt"

Turn A's mouthpiece is kind of like that beard/chin thingie, and the center-of-the-V-fin thing combined into one.

Zeta Gundam doesn't have a "beard" or chin.

It does. Its just colored white.

As jonli said, it can be any color, though most commonly red.

Like Brightman said, that red thing on his chin is the beard, you can argue that he doesn't have a V-Fin and just a mustache though.

I still can't think of any Gundam without a beard...even super abstract Gundams like Mark 5 and the weird stuff you see in Advance of Zeta all have beards.

What about Mandala Gundam and Mammoth Gundam? Can't see Mandala's mouth and Mammoth has an entire trunk.

Mandala's is covered by the scarf thing. But its there.

Mammoth's trunk IS its beard. -

^HAHAHAHAHAHA OH LORD!!!!! I burst out laughing when I saw that picture. Yeah I guess there really is no way around this one.

I guess the only way to break that formula is for some new Gundam designer to make a face design that's even more alienating than Turn A's design. Or maybe design a Gundam face that implies the shape of the beard using negative space.

Did the Virgo and Virgo II mobile dolls come with a standard cockpit? I was curious, since Taurus mobile dolls retain cockpits.

Not according to MAHQ

To explain, the Taurus was retro fitted with the MD system. The Virga was always designed as a Doll

That's what I thought was the case.

About the whole Gundam Beard thing, I think I finally found someone without it.

I'm not sure if he counts though. The Delta Gundam that was never built and ended up as Hyaku Shiki then eventually Delta Plus. The Delta Gundam basically looked like Delta Plus, but gold.

Not sure if you can count Gamma Gundam since that's Rick Dias.

EDIT: You know what I take that back again, turns out it does have a beard, it's just gold and Zeta like. Whoops. http://modelworksma.web.fc2.com/DELTACIMG6278.jpg

I guess the formula still stands, and the only one close to breaking it is Rick Dias since it's code named Gamma Gundam but never got the name Gundam in the end.

What does the '78' in the RX-78-2's model number stand for?
And on a related topic, how is that number related to the '0' in the Unicorn's RX-0 model number?

That it's the 78th prototype of the V Project IIRC. The Guncannon being the 77th and the Guntank being 75th. The others presumably never made it off the drawing board.

Don't know about the Unicorn, possibly relating to:

Spoiler for Unicorn:
