A planet going around these stars at a slower rate might be difficult to detect. How are they going around the star in days or maybe weeks rather than months and years like most of the planets in out solar system. Even Mercury takes 88 days to go around the Sun.

Chinese 'Thunder God' plant could crush cancer:

"Scientists believe a plant used for centuries in Chinese medicine may offer a cure
for the pancreatic cancer that afflicted Apple talisman Steve Jobs and many
others worldwide each year.

Boffins from University of Minnesota’s Masonic Cancer Center have been testing
Minnelide, a drug extracted from the lei gong ten or ‘thunder god vine’
(Tripterygium wilfordii) and presented their results in the Science Translational
Medicine on Thursday.

For those in the know, Minnelide is a water soluble form of triptolide, a
diterpenoid.

When tested on mice it was found to be “highly effective in reducing pancreatic
tumour growth” and “shows promise as a potent chemotherapeutic agent
against pancreatic cancer”, according to the research.

“This drug is just unbelievably potent in killing tumor cells,” Ashok Saluja, vice
chairman of research at the centre, told Bloomberg."

Pfffttt... everyone knows there's a perfectly fine planet waiting for us on Alpha Centauri, we just have to learn to love the mind worms.

Well, adapting the Gaia philosophy would do very well to help us love that

A few weeks back, executives of a U.K. company called Zappar came to my office to show me their augmented reality technology. I have been looking into augmented reality for over a decade and have only seen false starts. But for the first time, I finally saw a technology and app infrastructure coming together that suggests to me that augmented reality is finally ready for prime time.
I happened to be in London last week for meetings and met again with Casper Thykier, the Managing Director of Zappar and got an even more impressive demo of the technology. And perhaps more importantly, it brought me greater clarification about Zappar’s potential impact on games, movies, children’s books and advertising.
By definition, augmented reality (AR) is a technology that lets a person view a real-life scene, ad, kids book, game or movie poster, for example, via their mobile device and then adds information to the device’s screen to make whatever the person is viewing come alive with additional content.

Mobile Holodecks were you have to move through life to see content? But what about stuff going on around you? Personalized programmed realities? (Matrix?) Where you might enteract "normally" from someone elses point of view, but you just evaded a dragon back there when you crossed the street and unlocked the next instance when the automatic door opened for the supermarket.

Beluga whale 'makes human-like sounds'

Quote:
Researchers in the US have been shocked to discover a beluga whale whose vocalisations were remarkably close to human speech.

While dolphins have been taught to mimic the pattern and durations of sounds in human speech, no animal has spontaneously tried such mimicry.

Soundtrack to History: 1878 Edison Audio Unveiled

It's scratchy, lasts only 78 seconds and features the world's first recorded blooper.

The modern masses can now listen to what experts say is the oldest playable recording of an American voice and the first-ever capturing of a musical performance, thanks to digital advances that allowed the sound to be transferred from flimsy tinfoil to computer.

Well, this is quite promising: U.S. Navy will probably field shipborne lasers in less than two years. Apparently, the current prototypes aren't powerful enough to drill a hole into the side of a frigate or destroyer (we have missiles for that), but it might already be sufficient to shoot down low-flying aircrafts, high-speed suicide boats and incoming missiles, like a CIWS Gatling gun. A very attractive feature of this system is that each laser shot could cost as much as $1 - which is something to salivate on, knowing the price of a single RIM-116 RAM missile or a hundred Phalanx CIWS rounds.

In other news, high-tech weaponry is once again making great strides forward with the first live test of an EMP pulse weapon-equipped missile by Boeing.

And the prototype is working. One big advantage of this weapon is that it's non-lethal...unless you're carrying a pacemaker.

Next thing I know, we'll be talking positron cannons and cruises missiles so smart they can stop and idle at an intersection when the light goes red...

Or if they use it against a flying target.

To find out whether mitochondrial transplantation could work in people (it has already been demonstrated in other species of mammal) Dr Mitalipov collected eggs from the ovaries of women with mutated mitochondria and others from donors with healthy mitochondria. He then removed the nuclei of both. Those from the healthy cells, he discarded. Those from the diseased cells, he transplanted into the healthy cells. He then fertilised the result with sperm and allowed the fertilised eggs to start dividing and thus begin taking the first steps on the journey that might ultimately lead to them becoming full-fledged human beings.
Nearly all of the experimental eggs survived the replacement of their nuclei, and three-quarters were successfully fertilised. However, just over half of the resulting zygotes—as the balls of cells that form from a fertilised egg’s early division are known—displayed abnormalities. That compared with an abnormality rate of just an eighth in control zygotes grown from untransplanted, healthy eggs.
This discrepancy surprised—and worried—Dr Mitalipov. The abnormality rate he observed was much higher than those seen when the procedure is carried out on other species. That, though, could be because this is the first time it has been attempted with human eggs. Each species has its quirks, and if mitochondrial transplants were to become routine, the quirks of humans would, no doubt, quickly become apparent. With tweaks, they could be fixed, Dr Mitalipov predicts.

Watch a Robotic Navy Boat Shoot Missiles for the First Time Ever

Quote:
Killer robots have officially gone out to sea. For the first time, the Navy has fired missiles from a remote-controlled boat, as shown in the video above.

The firing came as part of a test off the Maryland coast on Wednesday. Six of Rafael’s anti-armor Spike missiles got fired off a moving inflatable hulled watercraft, aiming for a floating target about two miles away. The missile firings and the boat’s controls were all handled remotely by Navy personnel on shore at the Navy’s Patuxent River base.
