Edward can perform alchemical transmutation without the aid of a circle for two reasons (and I believe they are both necessary; you can't just do it with one or the other): a:He's extremely powerful (duh) b:In the AF-F sub of episode 15 the character Scar (aka The Wierd Guy With The X On His Head) says "By fixing your two hands together, you form a circle. With that focused power, you generate an Alchemic reaction. Without that irritating right arm, you cannot create an Alchemic reation. I will have to destroy it." I believe he took out Ed's right arm because it is by nature easier to transmute nonliving, inorganic materials than living organic materials (that's why alchemic chimera are such a big deal). Now Scars reasoning could be entirely his conjecture, but Scar seems to have some inherent understanding of the deeper workings of alchemy (I think it's cause of the tattoo). |

I was cracking jokes when they were discussing how Ed can't do alchemy without his right arm. I mean, isn't it obvious? Surely he cn draw an alchemic diagram with his left hand and do alchemy that way.
OR...he could stick his left hand over his right shoulder socket and form a circle that way. Who needs a right hand? Bwah! And then in Ep 16, when the little girl took his automail leg, surely he could form a circle if he clapped his left hand and right foot together! Sheesh. People just aren't imaginative these days... |
