game:

装甲悪鬼村正

More military supernatural + alt history but it's one of the best treatments on war, killing and the human condition out there. Despite the brutality and sadness it may be one of the most human and compassionate games of such genre out there.

Shadow Hearts Covenant for the PS2 is a fantasy rendering of the period during World War I. Our team of intrepid heroes try to stop a secret cabal in Europe followed by an effort by a high Japanese official to use the War as an effort to expand Japan's influence in Asia.

There are two other games in the series. The first has a good story, which is referenced at times in Covenant, but a rather boring battle system. The third is set in America with an entirely different set of characters whom I found less appealing than the ones in the first two games.

Just one warning -- this game cannot be played on PS3 via emulation. It locks up at points. I've also read it doesn't do well with emulators for the PS2 that run on a PC.

Does it have an English version?

It seems interesting because it reflects the brutality of the Industrialized Japanese Empire and all the wars it fought, I have threads on this subject:

I don't think so unfortunately, but it's very kanji heavy so if your chinese is quite good, you probably wouldn't have trouble with it

Alternatively you can try hooking the text with a machine translator as last resort and using jisho.org or some other dictionary for the more troublesome words

There's a sequel coming too. Announced last year

That is too bad, the story seems interesting. They should make a full blown anime or RPG out of it.

There were numerous tries for an anime. They all failed. Fortunately. It's too hard to adapt to anime format. For one it's too long.
