I hafta agree that the premier episode was quite well done. No question - this series is followed. I look forward to continuing to see what will be done in this adaptation!

At the moment though I must also admit that I still kinda prefer the source manga ... however, I'm all for being convinced otherwise.

Still wondering what material they are going to adapt and how far they are going to go with showing the really dark places the material goes at times....

Looks so much better in color and animation. The city Orth is just amazing, what a cool city, a city full of adventurers on the hunt of relics and escape of monsters. Poor Reg, lost his memory and gets the name of a dog. Riko is interesting with her goal to go after her mother and her enthusiasm for anything in relation with the Abyss but damn, if I were her superior or teacher I would be hella annoyed at this thoughtless, risk-taking, too curious for her own good girl. I probably beat her ass twice for all the mischief and trouble she causes daily. xD

The best premiere of this season so off. I hope this show keeps it up for its whole run.

There's been a bit of forewarning by manga readers that it is a darker type of story although the characters look cutesy. I can see that in in this first episode. I wonder how dark the anime will go since it is publicly broadcast.

I didn't even think to try this show as the chibi kid design and the summary weren't really doing it for me.

But everyone was saying it was really good so, I wanted to try it. And I'm really glad I did.

I love the fantasy nature of everything, the Ghibli-esque quality of the world and the simplicity and European fairy-tale feel of the characters. Why does this orphanage feel like it got transplanted from out of a 19th century classic novel like "The Little Princess" or "Oliver Twist"?

I love that there is an underlying darkness to the series. The beneath all the happiness and light-hearted nature, there are some really dark things going on.

Riko is cute and I love all her little orphan pals. Reg is interesting. I'm betting he's more of a cyborg than a robot considering he acts more human than mechanical and he has body parts that wouldn't really be "necessary" on a robot.

Also, the art and animation is just awesome. And the OST is just amazing. I'll be sticking with this one for sure!

I kept asking myself during the first few minutes why I was watching a show that looked to be made for elementary school kids. I'm still having trouble with the character models, but all the rest of the show's elements kept my attention. I grew to accept the chibi craftsmen in Oh! Edo Rocket; I can probably expect the same when it comes to Riko and friends.

How old do we think Riko is? Ten? Fourteen? Older?

After watching everything, I really like how the chibiness offsets the world itself. It really makes it feels like something really new and yet classic at the same time.

I honestly don't see any of the kids as in their teens, except for the Leader, who I'm guessing is the oldest of the orphans and was put in charge of them under the director. l

Riko, I'd say is no older than 12, probably less. The way the kids are so young and how they work at such a young age really gave me a feeling of literary 19th century orphanages from some classic books but in a fantasy setting. So, in my mind, the kids are about that age.

Yes, after I posted here I read the ANN episode reviews. Rebecca Silverman placed Riko between eight and eleven. I think more like ten or eleven. The Leader looks like a pretty standard anime adolescent while the kids look so chiibi.

I was just checking to see what others thought because adolescent girls in anime these days can look like they are ten.

That was a pretty amazing first episode from start to finish. What an amazing atmospheric setting, what a great soundtrack, what cute characters and what an intriguing plot setup. This show has everything going in its favour.

I wouldn't expect this to be elementary school material after what was said about this title on the earlier pages. Kids getting eaten is not elementary school material imo. It's Hunter x Hunter age range (16+).

I agree with the others that Riko is between 10-12 years of age.

Gon and Killua to me look like average child anime designs. The characters looks like chibi blobs. There's a big difference. Also, HxH's designs doesn't do it a lot of favors in getting people interested. I had stubbornly refused to get into the series for years because it didn't look interesting, I didn't care for the designs, and I wasn't about to get into another mega shonen series again. My brother literally had to bribe me into watching the first 10 episodes (I still didn't care for it after the usual 3). And it was only after all that, that I finally got into the series.

And sorry, but not every series is HxH. In fact, most aren't. So, yes, I do depend on character designs as a large factor in whether or not I look at a story or not.

Not everyone reads all that before checking out a series, and many actively avoid it just in case of spoilers.

The only reason I know that it would have dark elements was because all the manga fans won't shut up about it and so every blog and review of summer shows has said that "somebody" told them that dark things were coming into the series.

I'm glad I listened, but I wouldn't have know even that from just looking at the art, summary, and looking at the PV.

x2!!
The character design and having 6yo kids as protagonists was enough for me to completely disregard this anime even tho the story and main theme looked very interesting. Only in battle shonens i'm willing to follow kids in the main cast, however, in science fantasy mysteries like this one i tend to prefer adults as main characters otherwise i can't take it serious. Usually, i find shotas/lolis boring to follow and without any credibility to carry their stories (when the target audience are teens and adults that is).
But like you said, everyone was praising it and given the fact i was interested in the synopsis to begin with, i gave it a try. As expected, i loved everything except having kids doing the job meant for adults. It's so weird but whatever, the story hooked me and i hope it will become interesting enough to make me bypass the children issue

But i have to say, if they dare to make one single fanservice scene in this, it's insta drop

If I hadn't heard people praising this series, I would never have picked it up because of the characters. Little children as protagonists is something I rarely find interesting. However, after watching the first episode, I have to admit the potential story sounds interesting and the setting was absolutely beautiful. I agree with others that it gave me Ghibli vibes. I just wish they had made the characters older; I think it would have fit better with the overall story. But for the story and setting, I'll also overlook this minor setback and continue watching this series.

I stopped underestimating anime with kid MCs in chibi art the moment I follow Crayon Shin-chan. That series sure has a number of mature jokes that some kids won’t even get. After that point, I always watch the episode(s) first before dropping anime series with chibi MCs. Honorable mention also goes to Haré+Guu, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt and, to an extend, Lucky Star. Also, those of you who experienced and liked Madoka Magica should know not to easily dismiss anime with kiddy-looking MCs, especially if the premise sounds promising like Abyss.

And yes, I love this episode. It met my expectation (and even exceeded it in terms of the music) and delivered me the good stuffs. Here's hoping the show can maintain this level of excellence without fluctuating too much or going downhill.

The problem is not missing a potential good story but actually having children as protagonists. I just can't stand that in these type of anime even if i eventually take a like for the plot. For example, I couldn't pass Madoka first episodes because those characters and all the moe was killing me from the inside..lol. And i already knew it woud be like that but i tried it anyway because everyone was praising the show. But there is a limit to what i can watch
Luckily, this one is just kids without any moe or fanservice (so far) so i guess i will still be able to appreciate the story if it turns out to be really good.

In the case of Madoka, the fact that it was directed by Akiyushi Simbo and made by SHAFT encouraged me to look at that show. The opening visual sequence in episode one sealed the deal for me. It didn't take until the infamous episode three.

I don't know who the staff is for Made in Abyss so I didn't start out from the same point as with Madoka.

Episode 2:

Deep in Abyss is such a catchy theme song. I love it.

So we got some info dump about the robot boy including what he's capable of. Regu is a peculiar character that others are curious about as well including Gilo. I also really like Riko and Regu's character chemistry so far.

There's also some talk about Lyza among the locals, which happens to be Riko's mother. Interesting pacing so far for this show imo.

Yeah, this is pretty much the show of the season for me. I liked the bit where Riko is describing her 'investigation' of Reg, and I liked how the "Curse of the Abyss" has a real-world parallel, and shows the hardships faced by the explorers.

The place really has an atmosphere all its own.
